Where to stay in Florence

We are just beginning our planning for our next trip to Italy, which will be in the Fall of 2016. We plan to fly into Rome, spend the night at a little hotel we like near the train station, then take the train to Florence. We will stay there several days, then take a taxi to the airport to join a tour group that will be going on to Colle val d'Elsa. Eight days later we will return to Florence for a day or two, then return to Rome for our flight home.

So the main unknown in the trip (so far) is where to stay in Florence. We'd like to be fairly close to the train station, in a clean, friendly place, paying about 100 EU per night for a double room.

Thanks for any suggestions!

mary,

There are LOTS of choices in Florence and booking well in advance should provide better choices. You might have a look at THIS place which is relatively close to Firenze SMN rail station. They also operate a Trattoria, and I thought the food was good. As I recall, there's also a Laundromat across the street which is handy.

I stayed at the Hotel Monica two years ago. Three blocks from the Duomo and train station. The room was very basic but clean. It was a really short notice trip so options in the central city were limited; no complaints...

This fall, we will be staying in an apartment next to San Lorenzo. The location is perfect and we are paying way less than 2 hotel rooms.

My advise is to stay as close to the center of the old city as possible. This far out, you should be able to find the perfect place.

I have stayed at Hotel Bigallo and Hotel Paris, the Paris is closer to the station but the Bigallo is only five minutes further, at the corner of the Baptistery.

I got an email yesterday from a good friend who's in Florence now and raving about Hotel Casci (and complaining about 40 degree temps). I don't know how they decided, but I do know that they've been to Florence several times in recent years and this is their first time at that Hotel.

I am also staying at Hotel Casci in September based on a friend's recommendation. It's a family owned hotel. She had nothing but great things to say about it. It is just a few seconds from the Duomo and an 8-10 minute walk from the Firenze S. M. Novella train station. They also give a cash discount.
