Don, my husband and I will be in cinque terre in April. I was told to stay in Vernazza from someone who used to live in Italy. We are booked at Albergo Barbara (65 euros for a double with private bathroom). I think Monterose is a larger and more active town than Vernazza but Vernazza is supposed to be very beautiful, so it just depends on what type of setting you want. Good Luck!

Hi Don,
We stayed in Monterossa in Sept. at the Hotel Porto Rocco. We had tried to book less expensive place, but they were all booked by the time we decided to add CT to our plans. We payed more then we had orginally planned on, but splurged and loved it. Their web site to look at is - http://www.portoroca.it/hotel_e.htm - It was up on the cliff overlooking Monterossa and overlooking the town and sea. The hiking trial start off at the back gate. I could email you some pictures we took if you like.

By the way if you are trying to contact some places and do not get a response, this is the time of the year that alot of the people that run smaller places might be on vacation themselves. Larger places might have someone on duty to handle you quesitons. Be patient and try again in a week or two. They go on vactions because they don't have tourists this time of year. I ran into that a few times over the years.

If you cannot find what you want in CT, stay in beautiful but much larger Santa Margarita Ligure on train route and take a ferry to CT for the day. I have been to both areas, love them equally but for diff reasons.

I have stayed in Monterosso and Vernazza both and much prefer Vernazza. Hotel Gianni Franzi is quirky -- it took 98 steps to get to our last room! But, clean with a good location. We're staying there again in June.

We were in Cinque Terre in late Sept early Oct and stayed in Manrola/ It is a beautiful little town, quite and fewer tourists. You might want to give it a try.

Don, Folks that have been to CT certainly have their preferred spots - my wife & I love Riomaggiore (on the southern end). Small & friendly and still an easy walk or train ride to the rest of CT.

Don,

I stayed in Riomaggiore on my last visit and really enjoyed my stay (some great restaurants there too!). I used Mar-Mar Rooms and would certainly recommend them - the room was basic but very nice. The folks at Mar-Mar were very professional and easy to deal with. The only point to mention is that guests MUST arrive by 17:00, as that's when they close to have dinner with their family.

Manarola is also a great choice. There are some lodging choices listed in Rick's book. You could also look at www.torrettas.com (I know someone that stayed there, and they really enjoyed it!).

Monterosso is the largest of the five villages and has the best choice in lodgings. Vernazza seems to be the most popular (especially with tours) so you may have more trouble finding a vacancy?

Whichever location you choose, be prepared for "authentic" accomodations!

Happy travels!
