Where to stay in Cinque Terre

We're staying for at least 3 nights in CT and looking for a base which is convient for travelling, has lots of good restaurants (although not too touristy) and has a wonerful ambience in the evening. It seems Vernazza or Monterosso are popular.

I'd really appreciate any suggestions on hotels/BB's that are not more than E120 (we'll be there early October) - Thanks!

We stayed at La Mala in Vernazza last week. Vernazza is beautiful - lots of restaurants, very quaint. There were lots of American and German tourists there last week, although I suspect that it will be much quieter in October. La Mala was 165 Euro per night, but again, that may have been high because of the summer season. (www.lamala.it)

Irene... We stayed 8 nights in Vernazza at Toninno Basso's rooms at the top of the town. It is not a long walk at all from the train station and is close to the ATM and the post office. He has 4 lovely rooms that are very clean, have air-conditioning, and there is a computer in each room for your use. We paid 100 euros per night. It is a deal. Right next door is Il Pirata- a wonderful restaurant run by 2 brothers. Wonderful breakfast pastries and great dinners. Both places are in Steves' book on Italy.

I'd second the recommendation for either of Maria Cappellini's rooms. We stayed 3 nights at the Cozy Studio in May. Perfect location, right on the sqaure by the water and steps from several restaurants and bars. The Cozy studio also has a fridge and kitchen area. Vernazza was magical in the evening when many of the day trippers leave. No traffic, lights on the church, sea wall with benches looking out to the sea. And at €80 a great bargain.
