We are going to Tuscany in Sept. and want to rent a Villa, However we are unsure of which area would be best to stay. We will have a car but will also like to be somewhat close to the train. Does anyone know what the roads are like in the hill towns?

The area near Siena gives you a lot of variety to choose from for short day trips, and you can get train service from there to Florence and to Chiusi where the main railroad to Rome is.
Roads to most hilltowns are just fine. Many have parking outside of the historical center and do not permit cars in that area.
