I will be traveling to the area in early april and fell in love with the cinque terre after reading ricks book. my question is-we will be hiking and exploring during day-but where exactly should we stay. my bf thinks we should stay in larger city like genoa and train in or la spezia --he is wanting a little nite life and drinks.

If you're going to the CT, go to the CT. Genoa is an inconvenient distance to return at night just to party. I have no idea what La Spezia is like but it is a Navy town... Remember, you'll have to get to and from your hotel from the train station.
whatever you do, check the calendar to see if there are any Italian holidays during your visit to CT.Last April we were on a RS tour that took us to CT during an Italian holiday and the CT was like Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The hikes between towns were almost shoulder to shoulder and I am not kidding. We grew up in Louisiana and that's what it looked like. There are other seaside towns in Italy that would be just as scenic, although if you want nightlife, you might be better off in a city. We thought CT was very over rated.
