Where to stay for one night in Milan?

After 2 weeks in Italy, we fly out of Milan Malpensa on a Tuesday morning (10:45 am) in May. We were originally planning one full day in Milan, but since the museums are closed on Mondays, we have decided to take the train in from the CT monday afternoon and see the Duomo and have dinner.

Does anyone have an opinion on whether it is better to stay near the main train station and take the bus to Malpensa? Or stay near the Cardona station and take the train to Malpensa?

I would take hotel recommendations too - if you have them!

Thanks everyone!

A few years ago, I stayed at Hotel London and walked to Cadorna Station to take the train. It is probably about a 15 - 20 minute walk (or you could take a quick taxi ride). Hotel London was in a nice area between the Sforza castle and the Duomo; the hotel was nothing special, but fine.

I've also taken the bus from Milan Central on prior trips.

I preferred the train to the bus, but both work fine.

karen,

I used the same method as Laura - stayed at the London Hotel and used the Malpensa Express from Cadorna Station (bought my tickets the previous day so there wouldn't be any delays on the day of travel).

It's a very convenient location and as mentioned only about a 15 minute walk from the Hotel. However, I used a Taxi as I wasn't too keen on walking at that time of the morning with a heavy Backpack.

Cheers!

Either strategy would be a good idea. The Malpensa Shuttle station is located on the side of the Stazione Centrale and is a 45 minute ride from the airport.

I generally stay at the Hotel Berna near the station on Via Napo Torriano. They have their own website or look at venere.com for other hotel info, plus client reviews. I prefer to stay within walking distance of the station so I do not need to hump luggage on metros or trams.

A nice evening passagietta (evening stroll) is to head to the Navigli district. It is a former factory area gentrified into restaurants, clubs, bars, cafes, gelatorias, flea markets, etc. It is perfectly safe a crowded in the warm weather.

Buon viaggio,

RB

I will also give a thumbs up to Hotel Berna. Stayed here last July at the end of our Italy trip and it was great. Walking distance from the train station and very easy to get to the Duomo, etc. The breakfast buffet is probably the best we have had in Europe! Buon Viaggo!

Hi Karen,

We stayed at Hotel Berna for one night and it was perfect (http://www.hotelberna.com). It's only a 5min walk (just a few blocks) from the main train station. The rooms were very clean and actually quite large for a European hotel. It also included a huge breakfast buffet in the morning which was very good. Another plus was the mini-bar in the room is FREE. I'm serious...I've never see anything like it and it was filled with waters, soda, & Juice. It also included free internet for approx 10-15min which was nice to quick check e-mail.

I would highly recommend this place for your night stay. And it was reasonably priced...we paid $125 for the night and that was last May.

Have a wonderful trip!

Karen, I am doing similar in May and have been researching airport hotels as it is about 31+ miles from the city to the Malpensa. Check out Holiday Inn Express and First Hotel. Im looking for comments on the Holiday Inn at present. It is located between the 2 terminals--about 5 min.away, has a restaurant/bar; and free shuttle; about $110 US for a single at bit more for a dbl. Seems better to me to be at the airport and go into the city if you want and have the time the day before you leave. My flight leaves at 10 a.m. so I don't want to take any chances.
