where to stay for last night near fco

Where do you recommend we stay for our last night near the Fco airport? Also, we will be arriving at the train station in Rome at 1730 and need to transfer to the hotel. What would you suggest? Taxi? Cost?

I know many people post that one should stay in Rome the night before you fly back to the US, BUT at 73 and alone I chose to leave by ferry from Positano to Naples. Train to Rome[INVALID] Train to Airport[INVALID]Met by shuttle bus to Hotel Mach 2 and spent the night in an OK room but had early AM shuttle to airport. For me at my age and alone this was best for my peace of mind.

we stayed at the Euro House in Fumicino it was a small efficiency apt and was awesome, they also provided a shuttle to the airport about a 10 minute ride and no traffic.

Your question is a little unclear........ "arriving at the train station in Rome at 1730 and need to transfer to the hotel....... A hotel in Rome or a hotel near the airport? Second, how early is your flight the next morning? There are a number of business type hotels around the airport. If I had a better idea of what you wanted, I would some recommendations for you.

Sorry I was unlcear. We are coming from Ravello via taxi and train. Our ultimate destination is FCO. We arrive at Termini at 1730. We need a hotel near the airport since we are leaving for Boston the next morning on a 10am flight. Thanks for your help. Ellen

Rick's book has several suggestions for hotels right next to Tremi station and right next to the shuttle to FCO. I'm thinking one of those might be easier and faster than staying by the airport. And give you one more night acually in Rome.

With a 10AM departure you don't necessarily need a hotel at the airport. If a direct flight to the US you should be there by 7 AM or if a connecting to another city in Europe prior to the direct flight, then 8 AM is adequate. We would use a hotel around Termini and take a shuttle arranged by the hotel in the morning. That way we would have one last night in Rome which would be far more enjoyable than an evening around the airport.

ellen, given the fact that your flight isn't until 10:00, you could certainly stay in Rome and be at the airport in time. However, you'd need to be up early, packed and ready to go, allowing at least an hour for the entire trip to the airport via the Leonardo Express (you'd need time to buy the tickets, walk to Track 25 and wait for the next departure, in addition to the actual travel time of the train). ¶ Another option would be to stay at the Rome Airport Hilton (if your budget will allow), as it's connected directly to the Terminals via "moving sidewalks" and covered walkways. That would allow sleeping in a bit and then just walking to the Terminal to check-in for your flight (a very easy solution). Regarding arrival at Roma Termini at 17:30 and then transferring to your Hotel, the answer to that will depend on whether you choose a Hotel in the city or one at the airport. Cheers!

Just did this a couple of weeks ago. Our flight was at 10 ish and we stayed in Rome the night before. It wasn't bad going to the airport. We had a cab at 7:30 a.m. from our hotel near the Pantheon. We flew home on a Friday and with no traffic to speak of at that hour it was about 30 minutes driving to FCO. I don't think there is much to see out by the airport - the decision is whether you want to give up a last night in Rome to not worry the next morning because you will be closer to FCO. Safe travels.

Our problem is our morning flight back to the states leaves at 6:20am. We are coming in from Venice and don't think the shuttles around the FCO hotel leave that early (4:30?) Any suggestions on the most economical way to get to FCO...even the leonardo express can't get us there - are we resigned to an expensive taxi ride? Please help.....Christine

I have to disagree we stayed out last night in Fiumicino and it was wonderful I wouldn't have trade it for anything, the small little fishing village, we took a long walk on the dock and rock that jettison out into the harbor, you can sit and watch the planes leaving and arriving into the airport a small quaint town where everywhere we went we were greeted and talked to by the locals we became a part of the town for that day/night it gave the trip a whole new perspective we didn't feel like tourists. They may not have much to show as Rome does but the hospitality and the welcomeness, I would not hesitate to stay there again

We have stayed several times at the EUR Parco dei Medici (Holiday Inn), near the airport. They have a free shuttle bus and they serve a very nice breakfast buffet, including an omelet bar.

Most people prefer to spend their last night in the city center to enjoy one last night in Rome. The area around the airport is industrial, and you won't find any redeeming qualities there. I would find an inexpensive accommodation in the city center to spend your last night, and your hotel can arrange a taxi to take you to the airport the next morning (40 Euro flat fee).

I'm surprised no one has recommended Ostia, Rome's ancient seaport town. Ostia is about a 10-15 minute taxi ride from FCO. We've stayed there several nights - both on arrival and at departure (needing to be at the airport by around 4 am!). Plenty of fairly inexpensive hotels along the oceanside strand. We stayed at the Hotel (get this) PING PONG. Clean room, with a veranda facing the sea, great breakfast, cozy pub. We have eaten at three or four decent restaurants, including a great Chinese restaurant (when the sight of pasta begins to pale). Sweet town - again not more than 4-5 miles from the airport. As I was just in Rome last month I would also agree that you should stay in hotel around the train station. There are so many to choose from. My flight back to the states was at 10am. I left for the airport at 630 and made it with no problem. As for the poster who keeps saying stay by the airport in Fiumiucino he is not talking the same airport. Rome has two of them. Fiumiucino is south of the city and FCO is north of the city.
