Hello travelers! Lo and behold, the first hotel on our Rick Steves' Sicily tour ( The Ambasciatori) cannot accommodate an earlier arrival - even though we are 8 months out!! Where should we stay? We want to come 3- 4 days early to relax and enjoy more of Palermo. We love our creature comforts, tho- and need an elevator. Any thoughts?
We are having similar problems at the end of the trip. In Catania, the Liberty Hotel is full. Where else would you recommend for staying another 3 nights, so we can see more of Catania?
Last, we are going to end our trip in Sorrento, using it as a base for exploring that area. Any suggestions for wonderful places to stay there? We will be there for 5 nights. Two women, so area safe enough to walk to dinner, etc.
Thank you SO much. Calling RS travel service was very little help, sadly. Counting on you!
Check tripadvisor for hotels near your hotel. OR my RS tour stayed at the Hotel Posta near the large main post office. We were able to walk everywhere from there.
Try Hotel Mecure about 1 block from most cafes etc.
Just curious - did you mention that you were on the RS tour when you contacted those hotels?
In Dec. 2014, OAT used Palermo's Plaza Opera Hotel, & in Catania the UNA/Palace Hotel Catania. Both good for center-city walking; the UNA has an elevator for sure, probably the Plaza OH too; definitely good breakfasts - I remember food! UNA has a classy roof terrace bar with panorama views of the city & Mt. Etna. We LOVED Sicily.
For Sorrento, I suggest the Tasso Suites. It's right in town and all of Sorrento is safe to walk around. The hotel has some efficiency apartments and it also has a lift. We stayed there 4 nights in 2014 and really enjoyed it. Here's the website: http://www.tassosuites.it/en/home
Tabbies,
You may want to consider staying at Zoe's recommended
B&B Delle Vittorie.
I've not stayed there myself (yet) but it has great reviews, and it's not too far from the tour hotel.
You may be interested in reading Zoe's trip reports on Palermo and Catania.
BTW, Zoe was a valued member of this community and she used to love traveling to Sicily.
Unfortunately she has passed on and is dearly missed.
Have a wonderful trip!
I recommend Hotel Sorrento CIty
easy walk to trains and bus, comfortable and right on main drag for great people watching and strolling in Sorrento

Thanks, everyone! You have been most helpful! We look forward to a fabulous experience!
We stayed at Hotel Plaza in Sorrento in Sept 2017, close to the train station and to the main piazza. The thick windows kept out the noise and we sat several evenings up on the rooftop bar/infinity pool looking at the sunset listening to live jazz saxophone player, something out of a dream. The hotel, bed, linens were fabulous and the breakfast buffet was amazing. We hope to return to Sorrento and I would definitely stay there again and again.
Thank you for this recommendation! We got their last room!
