where to stay around Rome

Here is a puzzle I can't seem to solve. My husband and I are arriving at FCO from Paris at Terminal 3, 8 pm on Friday, October 21. We have been to Rome several times and will be there in November for a day as well. On this trip our main aim is to visit Ostia Antica on Saturday. On Sunday at 11am, we must pick up my sister and brother-in-law in a rent car at FCO for drive to friend's house in Assisi. Then on to Venice to catch a transatlantic ship back to U.S. , so leaving the car in Venice. So, where do we stay and when/where do we get the rent car? I have looked at hotels near the airport and the Hilton inside the airport. Nothing looks too great and I do not know how difficult it is to pick up a reserved rent car at FCO. But it seems to make no sense to go into and back out of Rome for such a short time. My husband is 75 and has heart trouble, so lots of carrying of luggage and walking is out of the question.
I would appreciate your suggestions on where to stay, how to get to Ostia and where to rent the car. Many thanks.

Stay at on of the hotels at the airport, rent the car at the airport, and take a taxi to OA. Be sure to arrange a pick up time from OA as OA is in a pretty quiet area. Both the airport and OA are relatively closed together but I am unaware of any public transportation other than into Rome and out to OA. However, check with the hotel.

Peggy I'm sorry I can't answer your main questions, but a word of caution - Ostia Antica is a B-i-g place, I speak from personal experience. As your husband has difficulty walking long distances it may be rough on him. I'm wondering about a wheelchair or electric scooter, but my memory of the paths around Ostia Antica is that they may not all be smooth enough for that. Its a lovely place and we loved it - just a word of caution...
