We have 5 days to see Florence and surrounding hill country. We would love to stay in one place, preferably an apartment or B&B. We're thinking 2 days in Florence (we've been before) and 3 days driving around surrounding towns. We would like to rent a car for the hill country part but do not want to drive in Florence at all. So the best idea seems to be to stay in a nearby town that offers train and car-rental service and make that our base. We would take the train to Florence for day trips and rent a car for the other days. Is there any town that's also nice to visit that would work for us with this plan?

Well we rented a car in Florence near the train station (2 blocks at most maybe) but outside the historical center and made a bee line out of town. Hertz I think. Spent two weeks in Tuscany etc. Only trick was making sure we returned the car AFTER rush hour in the morning (which ends o/a 10). So you could stay in Florence two nights and then locate a nice place in the country side when using your car. Just a thought.
