We are planning our 1st trip to Italy for 11 nights. Plan to stay in Rome first 4 nights then head to either Sorrento or Amalfi or Ravello. Would like to spend 2 nights on the AC and 4 in Sorrento then back to Rome the last night. I have my room in Rome but am second guessing the time in the other places. Is it worth staying on the Amalfi coast or should we just hire a driver from Sorrento to see those places? Am I staying too long on Sorrento? Should I head back to Rome for two nights instead of one? I’m just so confused as to what would be best.

The specifics are really important: tell us exactly what you want to see and do, and we can advise on best places to base in order to accomplish it.
Is anything adjustable? If so, I’d consider taking train to Naples on arrival so you can put all of your Rome time together, but that’s not vital.

I can only tell you what we are doing the last two weeks of April- flying to Rome but not staying there (have already been). Going to straight to Salerno for 4 nights, 4 nights in Amalfi Town and 4 nights in Sorrento. We think this is a good mix based on what we want to do- Pompeii, Herculaneum, Paestum, some hiking, scenery. This is our first time to this area of Italy. Many others on the forum can offer more sage advice, but you'll be asked what your interests are and when you are going.

Don’t see us going to beach as we live near some beautiful beaches and go often. We just want to get a feel of the AC and see Pompeii, Sorrento etc.

Going last two weeks of May. We really just want to see the sights. We are 61 and 65 and have never been to Italy so I guess we just want to soak it all in.

Visualize how you wish to spend each day. Do you want to unpack fewer times and spend hours in transit each day or move more but see different places at night—when travel becomes more difficult.
Again, are you willing/able to head to the coast on arrival?

I would be willing to go straight to the coast on arrival. I think I want to see Ravello as it seems like a good place to relax after a few hectic days I think Sorrento would be a place to work from for seeing Pompeii and Capri Amalfi etc. I guess I just don’t know how to put it all together and make it work and make sense.
