Where to Stay

We are going to Florence for a wedding in August. We would like to go to Rome for one night so we can spend two days there. It will be my hubby, 23 year old daughter and her boyfriend, 18 year old son and myself. I am most interested in the colosseum and my daughter is most interest in the Vatican. Any suggestions on what part of Rome to stay in? I have never been to Europe.

Hubby and I are flying into Pisa to spend three days in Vernazza and then meeting up with the kids in Carmingnano Italy for a family wedding. We want to travel from Carmingnano to Rome for two days, one night.

Any suggestions, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Many of Rick's hotel recommendations are near Roma Termini train station and Piazza Republica, and that sounds like a convenient choice for you. You'd be close to your trains both ways, to the metro line, bus hubs, and taxi stands, giving you several transport options to the Colosseum and Vatican areas. For here, you can also walk downhill to the Colosseum (2 km). For groups, taxis can be a good value to cross the city to the Vatican; Rick's book estimates 11 euros per car, one way.

When we are in Rome, we always stay in the Termini for the convenience to local transit. It is a little longer walk but most of Rome is still walkable from the Termini area. It is an hour to the Vatican but buses run frequently. We like hotel Sonya and have used Aberdeen. Both very good but wife likes the lattes at Sonya better - very small difference.

Rome is a minimum 4 day stop, and there is so much there to see. If you only have one night, you might want to just stay up in Tuscany.

We were in Rome and Venice this month, and we stayed 5 blocks from the Vatican for 3 nights. One of my other favorite neighborhoods to stay in is close to the Panthenon.

Is there the possibility you could limit Vernazza to 2 nights and stay in Rome at least 2 nights?

Not sure how you are going to travel from Carmignano to Rome. It's a nice hill town but it's going to take time to get to Florence to catch the high speed.train. Do you have a car? You'll probably need one in Carmignano. The closest station is at Signa, on the Florence Pisa line.

Anywhere in Rome will work. The station is logistically convenient but the historical center is nicer in the evenings

Two days in Roma is better than no days in Roma. If you have a full day, you can visit the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums.

I like the Piazza Navona/Pantheon area. Between the two sights you most want to see.

Why not stay in the Veneto after the wedding, rather than make the long journey to Rome for such a little time. As well as Venice, you are close to Padova, Vicenza and Verona.

You can take the metro to both the Colosseum and the Vatican museums, quite possibly faster than buses.
