Parents w/2 romantic young adults. Leaving Corniglia/ Cinque Terre by train 6/9 AM. Want to go through Milan to the Lake Como region. Want accommodations to stay 2 nights (6/9-6/11) near there. We plan to be on 2:35 PM Bernini Express out of Tirano on 6/11 to go about to Zurich that evening @ 8:00 PM. Where along a train route out of Milan would you want to stay for 2 nights between two long train rides? Varenna? Mennagio, and ferry to Varenna for train AM of 6/11? Other?

I suspect real issue is if there is something available in Varenna, Bellagio or Mennagio. If you can find something in one of those towns, take it. Its easy to get to the others by ferry
Fabulous scenery and your choice of how much activity to engage in. Sit at the beach, climb the hills or go shopping

My suggestion would also be Varenna. It's a beautiful town in the mid-lake area, and easy to get from there to Tirano to connect with the Bernina Express. Do you have a copy of the RS Italy guidebook? That will provide suggestions for hotels in Varenna. If you'd rather solicit hotel suggestions from the forum, it would help to know what your criteria are?

I will add my two cents to stay in Varenna, lovely town. We stayed in the Villa Cipressi (sp), nice with a very good kitchen. By kitchen, I mean we ate dinner there one of our nights and the food was wonderful. I was on the Rick Steves 17 Days Best of Italy tour so I couldn't tell you the cost of my room but his guidebook will.
I took the train from Milan to Varenna - super easy and about an hour's ride with beautiful scenery. If you sit on the left side of the train, you will be rewarded with gorgeous views of Lake Como!
I want to do the Bernini Express someday, sounds like a lovely itinerary.

Done! Thanks you three! We were fortunate and did locate a simple 2 BR apt. In Varenna from which to wander and enjoy a bit of the area. It's all we really needed.

I was so surprised to read this because we have some of the same plans as you and on the same dates!!! We also plan to leave Corniglia on the 9th, spending two nights in the lake region before getting on the train from Tirano to Chur! I don't think we're going to do the actual panoramic Bernina Express but we'll go the same route. I would probably stay in Varenna, too, but we wanted to spend a day in Vallee Verzasca (we did this in 2003) and Locarno and Ascona have easier access so we'll probably stay there!

Annladams-we 4 may well run into you! Look for the sixty-ish parents with the young couple!
