Where to spend the night between Cortona and Rome

I just about have the itinerary worked out for my next trip to Italy. We will be flying out of Rome and I want to spend the last night somewhere between Cortona and Rome. It has to be close enough to get to Rome for a late morning departure. (it looks like we might be able to get a flight out at 10:00 a.m.) I am leaning towards Orvieto, but we have stayed there before on our last night. Has anyone got any suggestions for another town for our last night?

Orvieto would be a good option but for a 10:00 a.m. flight, personally, I'd plan to stay in Rome. I'd stay near the Termini train station and take the Leonardo Express Train (it takes about 30 minutes.)

I really want to stay somewhere outside of Rome. Has anyone been to Narni? It looks like a real possibility.

I would also recommend Orvieto, especially if you haven't been there before or been to Civita before (which you can do before you leave).

On the other hand, if you have a flight at 10 and, ideally, should be there 2 hours before, I would recommend staying in Rome so you're not in any super rush or under any pressure to get there. Won't have to worry about late trains or train strikes either. Otherwise you'll at least have to catch the 6 am train out to get back to the Termini station, then back to the airport.

But if you're still determined to stay somewhere else outside of Rome and other than Orvieto, then either Viterbo or Narni would be a nice place. In this case, I would lean toward Narni because even though they are almost equally close, due to the train layout it takes about twice as long to get to Rome from Viterbo (although, if there's a bus, which I'm sure there is, that should be faster; so that could be an option). But since you asked about Narni, it's a very nice, somewhat quaint town with very friendly locals. If you go there, also swing by nearby Amelia which is very picturesque in a way and also has friendly locals.

Sounds like a good a trip though!

Thanks for the suggestions. Husband isn't crazy about the idea of driving to the airport so early so we will probably stay in Rome. Also, we will likely have a friend with us who has never been to Rome before so if she goes we will ask her what she wants to do. We can spend the last day and night in Rome(our friend has never been to Rome but just one day there might be too cruel so if we do that option we may have to go to Rome a day earlier), or go to Orvieto and Civita for the day(we have been but she has not, we actually went to Civita on our way back to Cortona after we drove the same friend to the airport on a previous trip), or drive to Narni and spend the day there, and maybe visit Amelia too, then head to Rome and spend the night there.
