Where to spend our last night before flying out of Verona

Hi all, My husband and I are planning a 2-week trip to Europe in June. This is my first time to Europe so we're hopping around a bit between countries to squeeze in as much as we can, knowing we'll want to come back for more in-depth trips later. (We're doing 4 nights in Paris, 2 nights in Freiburg im breisgau, 1 in Fuessen to see the King's Castles, 3 in Salzburg, and then ending in Venice). Needless to say I'm super excited but also overwhelmed by all the planning. We will arrive in Venice on Thursday June 23 in the late afternoon coming from Salzburg via Villach. As of now we have hotel reservations for 4 nights in Venice. We finally bought our plane tickets this week, flying back to Chicago out of Verona -- we wanted to fly out of Venice but it saved us a lot of $ to do Verona instead. The flight leaves at 9:35 am on Monday. Here's my question: Should we...
a) Keep all 4 nights in Venice, get up early Monday and schlep our way over to Verona airport to get there by 7:30? I'm assuming 2 hrs early is suggested? Can we feasibly get to Verona airport at that time? b) Cancel the last night in Venice, and move along sometime Sunday afternoon or evening onto Verona to stay there? I know we wouldn't really see much of Verona, but it could still be fun to stroll around for a few hours on our last night. Although, it looked like hotels in the city center of Verona were much more expensive than the place we have reserved in Venice. c) Cancel the last night in Venice, and move along Sunday to Padua or Vicenza to stay the night, then to Verona Monday morning? Thanks in advance for any advice to this newbie! :) ~Sarah

I think Venice is too far to get there in the morning. Verona is easy to enjoy in an evening - the attraction is the town itself. And gelato. I'd pick a hotel that is close to whatever transfer you'll use to get to the airport in the morning. Keep searching on Tripadvisor and Venere. Verona is one town that is usually good to have reservations made. I've had difficulty finding hotels on the fly there.

I also suggest staying in Verona. It is a great place to walk around and see the sites. Since you need to be there to fly home, you may as well get a chance to see it. It may inspire you to return there some day.

Andrea's right. Verona is lovely and well worth a day. I'd say 2 days, but I wouldn't want to spend less than 3 days in Venice. Are we talking about June 2011? Late June is the beginning of opera season in Verona and you may have trouble getting a room this late in the day. Or perhaps that is why the places you are looking at are so pricey.

There is plenty to see in Verona but I doubt you will be able to find a room. It's opera season. I would try the Hotel Aurora. It is right on the Piazza Erbe.
Verona has a wonderful Roman arena and amphitheatre, great churches and castle and lots of shopping. I spent two days there in April, my second trip there, and never ran out of things to do.

Thank you all so much for the advice! Heading to Verona on Sunday sounds like what we'll do -- other friends of ours who have traveled a lot in Italy recommended the same thing. Thanks!
