Where to spend 4 days in Italy in October

My husband and I will be in Italy in October this year. So excited for our first trip! I would really appreciate your advice for where to spend 4 days on our own at the end of our 12 day tour that ends in Venice. We are flying into Rome on the 14th of October.

Where does the tour go? What are you interested in? What type of stuff do you like to do? Do you want to rent a car or use public transport?
More detail will help you get better suggestions, but just to get the ball rolling, something a bit more low-key like Ravenna could be a nice contrast after a tour.
You will feel comfortable after all that time in country, so I'd go to a smaller village and soak it all in.

I also like Ravenna a great deal. It's unusually pretty and has the spectacular church mosaics. However, I probably wouldn't stay there for 4 nights, because it's not a great hub for public transportation. Maybe 2 nights in Ravenna and 2 in a different spot, or day-trip to Ravenna from Bologna, which would give you access to a lot of other good side-trips as well, including Modena, Parma and Ferrara.

Another possibility is Padua, which has a lot of sights of its own and is well-located for side-trips to Vicenza, Ferrara and Verona. You could also run back to Venice one day if, at the end of the tour, you find yourself wanting more time in that city.
