We will be leaving Cinque T. to tour the Tuscany area heading toward Siena, and like to make that trip by car. Where would be the best place to rent a car? In CT? or the next big town? We are planning on dropping off the car in Siena (or another town near by) once we are done touring the surrounding area. Thank you in advance.
You could pick up the car at La Spezia or Pisa
Hi Lora. We rented a car in Siena this summer and then dropped it off in La Spezia & took the train to the CT. This is the reverse of your plan but I would recommend La Spezia. The train from La Spezia to the CT takes under an hour & is very easy.
Thank you for the information.
Do you remember how much you paid for the car rental?
We picked up our car at Piza airport. A short trip by train, 10 minutes, from Piza Centrale station. We wanted to see the tower in Piza and the airport was a good place to pick up the car and avoid driving in the city.
We rented in LaSpezia, for our drive to montepulciano. Everything was fine except for the walk to the rental agency. When I booked through autoeurope, they said 1.2 KM to the San Bartelemeo office. Not so! You cannot walk it, so save the hassle, and get a bus. From the agency on San B, it was fairly easy to get out to the Autostrada, though a GPS would be a big help. From there it is an easy drive to Pisa, FLorence, Sienna, or any point south. Boy, would I love to be back there now! Enjoy. Jeff
I had the same experience as Jeff. AutoEurope assured me that the agency was really close to the train station in La Spezia but it definitely was not & we had to take a taxi from the car rental office to the train station. Perhaps some of the other rental companies might be closer to the train station but Europcar (reserved through AutoEurope) was not. Definitely take or rent a GPS. It's not always foolproof but in retrospect, we would not have attempted to drive in Italy without it.
