Where to rent car for Dolomites

Hi everyone!

Upcoming trip: 5 nights Dolomites, 2 in Mittenwlad, 1 in Munich.

Spending first 5 nights in Corvara in the Alta Badia in the Dolomites.

Flying into Venice and out of Munich.

Should we start our rental at Marco Polo/Venice or Bolzano or Belluno?

We plan to take the train from Bolzano to Mittenwald at the end of our Dolomite stay. Thanks in advance!

We took the train to Bolzano from Verona and rented a car at the Bolzano airport. We took a taxi to the airport car rental agency and back when we returned the car. As I recall the rental options were limited. We requested a Fiat Panda but that wasn’t available so we were given an Alfa Romeo Giulietta for no extra charge. The Bolzano airport is tiny. I got the impression that the rental agency is not always manned but they have someone there per your stated arrival and departure time when you rent the car.

You’re thinking about renting a car after a night of no sleep?

I agree with Mary Pat. If you are planning on renting a car directly on arrival from the states, don’t.

Thanks for the replies.

Yes I forgot to add that. Was either doing a night in Venice or train to Verona, Belluno or Bolzano. Before the Dolomites

You could rent a car in Venice and turn it in Brunico, just down valley from Corvara. The only biggie I see located in Brunico is Avis, and their only rental location is Veice airport. So you could rent after you land, drive into Venice and park in the garage overnight while you relax in Venice. Just do not exceed the speed limit on the causeway by any amount as it is blanketed with speed trap cameras. Then drive to Corvara via Cortina and over the Paso Falzarego. Interesting stop there if you have any WW I interest, or want to take the cable car up for the view.

When you leave Corvara, drive down to Brunico/ Bruneck and turn the car in. Note they are closed noon Saturday until Monday morning. A short walk from the Avis location is the Bruneck Nord train station where you can get a train to Mittenwald, via Fortezza, Brennero, and Innsbruck.

PS from Pittsburgh?

Please don't drive within the first two days of arrival. Mountain driving is very different from freeway driving. The lanes are narrow and windy. Hairpin turns are not uncommon. Also, if you don't drive manual shift, then reserve an automatic ASAP.
