Where to rent a car in the Tuscany area?

We will be traveling from Siena to Orvieto and other surrounding hill towns in Tuscany and I have heard that it is a good option to rent a car for exploring the hill towns.

Does anyone know where a good rental car service is located somewhere between Siena and southern Tuscany?

Thanks!

The drive from Siena to montalcino and then over to montepulciano is amazing. Winding roads, but safe. just incredible scenery. As suggested I would rent from one of the car rental agencies by the train station outside of the town walls in Siena, on the day you leave Siena. You don't want a car when you're there. You can drop your car at the train station in Orvieto. we used hertz and their office in Orvieto was a really short walk from the train station. Very convenient.

Rented a car from autoeurope in Arezzo. Picked it up just across the street from the train station. Had easy access to the highway.

Perugia has a car rental office right at the train station (Hertz, I think). Rented it from the US.

We just got back from Italy, and we rented a car in Siena, booked in advance from AutoEurope/EuropCar. You won't need the car for getting around within Siena, but it's an awesome way to explore the hill towns and the countryside. We visited Cortona, Montepulciano, Pienza, San Gimignano and Bagno Vignoni all in two days, returning to our hotel in Siena each evening. It was easily one of the highlights of our trip. Just plan to bring your own GPS with European map data -- the rental car company may not be able to guarantee one.

I use gemut.com, who in turn goes through Auto Europe. I have found with all of the autos I have rented, that Andrew Bestor. [email protected] gets me a rate even lower than the rate quoted on the Auto Europe website. Not sure exactly how that happens, but it has always worked out well for me. You can either email Andrew or call and he returns the call or message in a very timely manner. They also have a decent website, www.gemut.com.
