Where to keep copies of important documents?

I keep reading that I should copy my passport and credit cards. Where do I keep that extra copy? Especially the copy of the credit card numbers which could be just as good to a thief as the real thing?

  1. Leave the copies with a friend or relative at home. If you need them in Europe, they can email or fax the copies to you.

  2. Alternatively, email the copies to yourself before you go. If you need them over there, just find an internet spot and open the email.

  3. If you're traveling with others, exchange copies of your stuff with each other.

I do as Tom suggests, but I also keep one copy in my money belt. With a 7 hour time difference between Italy and MN, I want to have a way to contact the credit card folks without waking up the folks back home. Also, remember to get a non 800 number for each of your credit card companies. I also password control the copy of the file with my credit card info I email to myself, just as an extra security measure since I recently had my main email account hacked into.

I keep a copy of my husbands passport page & passport size photo of him in my moneybelt & vice versa. We also keep a copy of each other's credit card & debit card (front & back)

we also leave a copy of these with trusted friend back home.

I didn't know you could password protect an email document. How is this done? I have yahoo and earthlink accounts.

If you sign on to Earthlink or Yahoo through the web (as opposed to an email program), you're already protected by your Yahoo or Earthlink password.

BUT ------ if using an internet cafe or any other public access computer, there is absolutely no security even with a pass word. For that reason I encode all of my credit numbers with a simple alpha substitution code. It is robust enough that it would be nearly unbreakable by common internet thieves.

you could also copy the info to a flash drive. Your hotel would then be able to print the info with their computer if necessary.

I make copies and leave with someone at home, and take a set with me which stays in a seperate spot from the real cards and passport.

hint... be sure the copy of the back is clear. That phone number to call is printed very tiny. I enlarge the copy or re-write the number if I forget.

I like the encripted system with email!
