Will be visiting this area 3 maybe 4 nights. Where do you suggest we base, Sorrento or Positano, and when staying at either can day trips be made to the surrounding towns?

Sorrento is larger and I think more fun with better transportation options and more lodging choices. You can ferry to Positano, Capri and Naples. It's a quick train ride to Pompeii. You could also split your nights to experience both in the evenings but only if you have a minimum of four nights. This is a popular question with most posters opting for Sorrento.

I just returned from a four day stay in Sorrento and stayed at Il Roseto B and B. It was a lovely and relaxing place to stay. The rooms are nice and they have a beautiful garden where they serve breakfast. They also have a pool and hammock that you can relax in.
