Where to go in Italy in December, 2013!

This will be my third trip back to Italy in early December and I am returning to the celebration on December 8th in Rome.I happened upon it two years ago and now want my sister, Mary, to see the Immaculate Conception all around the Spanish Steps! We have also home based in Florence to have seen Lucca and Assisi on day trips and in Venice for 5 wonderful days.
Does anyone have any suggestions for adding somewhere new to a great home base after Rome? I looked at Sorrento but it closes up in the winter for good reason.

How about Bologna? A lively city with great food and also a transport hub for day trips to other cities.

Bologna sounds great. We saw it on the train going to Venice. Any ideas on where to stay and what to do. We will be riding the train, so any advice on getting into the city. It looked fairly large. Thanks again.

I love Bologna! San Petrino Church is a must see. The fountain in the piazza by the church is worth a few pictures. Food is great in Bologna. Climbing the tower is always fun. Great pictures from the top. I stay at the same place each trip and have restaurant recommendations. Send me a private email if you want that information.
