where to go in italy !

a family adventure . myself and one other traveled there over 40 years ago ..loved it ..now taking family 68-58-31-29-28-21 on a family outing. I vote a big city ..Rome or Florence and then the amalfi coast or the East coast. we are not a super athletic family, we love walking, strolling, beaches ( water), Art, history FOOD and mostly absorbing the culture and people. We like off beat, eating where the blue collar or family eat.BUT i want them to also experience some of the historical. Main thing to avoid is I over plan. soccer could also be included. Traveling early Sept.. 8-9 days. thank you

The easy one for me is Rome - Sorrento. History, food, beach, strolling... (if everyone is physically capable of seeing Pompeii/Herculaneum; BTW, thanks for the ages and dates of travel!). Or, Florence - Cinque Terre. Or, Florence - Sorrento...! Or...

Fly from NYC to Tuscany (Florence or Pisa). Visit Florence (and Tuscany). Train down to Naples (go past Rome), then commuter train (Circumvesuviana) to Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast (Amalfi coast is reachable via bus from the Sorrento Circumvesuviana station). After staying a few days in the Gulf of Naples area (Naples, Pompei, Herculaneum, Capri, Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, etc.) come back up to Rome (via train from Naples is 70 min). Rome will be your last destination from where you will fly back to the US. If you want to add Venice to this trip, fly to Venice first instead of Tuscany. Visit Venice, then take the train down to Florence (Tuscany). Then follow the same itinerary I said above.

Rome hands down. You could spend all your days there and not get bored with any of it. Take a couple of days for the Amalfi Coast for a change if you wish, however I've always left Rome thinking more time there would have been great.

8-9 days stick to sleeping in two places: Rome and Sorrento would be my recommendation given your interests.

I agree with Rome-Sorrento ... or better yet, Sorrento-Rome. If you haven't purchased your tickets yet, see if you can fly into Naples and visit Sorrento first. That's a great way to ease into your vacation. I think you'll need to spend 5 nights in Sorrento ... if you visit Pompeii, Capri, take a boat to Amalfi, and do the Amalfi coast bus ride ... that's four busy days! Then travel back to Rome, spend the remainder of your time there and fly home from Rome.

Not sure how you like to travel but with the family group you have I think Rome and Florence would be wonderful with a few day trips to different sites, I love apartment living especially with a number of family as it allows you to experience the real life of markets, food and being together around the table.
VRBO has some wonderful places in Rome and Florence.
