Where to go from FCO via public transport

We land at FCO at 10:30AM in mid-September and hopefully will be through customs and have our luggage by noon. Can someone suggest a town or village, easily reachable by bus or train, where we can spend our first night. We love Rome, but would like to experience something different. Our travels will take us north and south and east of Rome, so any of these directions is fine since I am just beginning to map our route. I had thought of Orvieto, but would prefer not to have to change trains.

Not much choice here, as the Leonardo Express just goes to Termini and the Regionale FL1 goes as far north as Orte in the Tiber valley, 45 miles north of Rome. Orte could be nice, but the train station is actually in Orte Scalo, about 1 1/2 miles away, so you would still need a bus transfer.

The FL1 line departing from Fiumicino Airport can either end at Orte, as already mentioned, or Fara Sabina, or Monterotondo. None of these stops, or the ones in between that are not in Rome, for that matter, are interesting enough for spending the night there. If you could consider one brief exchange in Roma Trastevere, you could switch platforms and go north on the coast, to Santa Marinella for instance, or you could go still north but to the countryside, and specifically to Lake Bracciano. There are more options if you were to get to Roma Tiburtina, but I don't want to overwhelm you.

Check transportation to the towns of Tivoli or Frascati.

Frascati is a lovely little town, an easy train ride from Termini. Just be aware, (as we were not and missed our train!), that the train stops a good way down the track for boarding. There are two boarding platform areas (A&B), and you almost cannot see the second platform from the terminal.

You have enough time that you could easily reach Orvieto and be on your way to whatever you have planned for the rest of the week. This would involve catching the Leonardo Express or one of the newer bus services to Termini, from there catch a train, service at least every hour, sometimes more frequent, takes about an hour and a half, so you could easily be there by 3:00 in the afternoon.
