Where to Go for My Birthday weekend?

I'll be studying abroad if Florence this fall. My move in date is 9/2 and my birthday is 9/11. It falls on a Thursday and we were discussing taking a train that evening or Friday morning and returning Monday around lunch.

My girlfriend and I will be together and a few friends will be there too, i'm not sure if our other friends will want to venture out with us. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go for a memorable 21st birthday (drinking age has no affect on anything in Italy obviously..)

If its my girlfriend and I alone i'd like to go somewhere fun where we can drink great wine and enjoy great food - we're huge foodies.
If its a group of us i'd like to go somewhere where can all stay together for a reasonable price and can go out on the town and maybe a meal somewhere together.

From Florence by train you can get to Venice in 3-3.5 hours, Rome in 1.5-2 hours, or Paris in 12-13 hours (I always check the distance to Paris from wherever I am in Europe.) But, I'd probably go to Rome (unless you've already been there.) You can search this site for hotel and restaurant recommendations. Happy Birthday!

Sharon,
Thanks for the suggestion - the first place I looked into going was Rome - although I have been there before, I was with a school group so I didn't get to explore on my own and was on a strict schedule. Venice would be amazing but I might wait and go later in the semester. Rome had so much potential to be a lot of fun but like I said with the school group I didn't get to explore it on my own. I'm going to Paris is august so i'll X that idea only because I wont be able to afford it again :(

I also did not realize it was very far from Florence.

JB,
You can't go wrong with spending your birthday in Rome and it will be a much different experience from being with a student group. If you have Rick's Italy Guidebook check out the Trastevere section of Rome as a colorful neighborhood to either stay or have a fun dining experience. My birthday is 9/13 and I'll be in Ireland! Enjoy your time in Europe--what a great opportunity!
Best,
Sharon
