We are going on the best of Southern Italy in October...we really don't want to fly home out of Naples...the flights are way too long. Any recommendations on where we could go for a couple of days that is not too far away? The only thing I can come up with is the Lake Como area and fly home out of Milan...any other ideas?
You can take the train back to Rome.
+1 for flying home out of Rome. That's what we always do when we conclude our trips to Naples.
The tour starts in Rome with 2 nights- are you arriving there early for more Rome? If not- go back to Rome for more.
Are you considering Milan/Lake Como because flights out are better? I get that.
It's a 6.5-7 hour train trip Naples to Varenna- how many nights do you have? If you have 4 nights- it's doable.
3 Lake Como then 1 Milan- you need to be closer to MXP for flight out.
We took a train from Salerno all the way to Venice after our Amalfi Coast visit- that was a bit longer I think. We enjoyed it- took a picnic, rested. We had been in Rome at start of that trip and didn't want to backtrack- it was a great chance to see Venice again.

Is there a city in Europe where you can fly home non-stop? You could fly from Naples to that city before flying home.
For example, I often take a low-cost flight to another city (e.g., London) where I spend a couple of days and then take a shorter, non-stop flight home.
What about taking the train to Florence from Naples for a couple of days? Flight connections might be better. We will be doing something similar in October from the Amalfi coast
