We have 4 nights available before meeting our group in Rome . We are in Rome 4 nights. Then we have 8 nights after Rome to travel. Need ideas of what to do. Florence and Tuscany for sure, as we love wine! Willing to rent a car or take trains. Help we need ideas! I have been to Italy , husband has not .

Where is your group going or do you just stay in Rome for the 4 nights?
Have you already bought your airline tickets or are you open to flying out of another city?

No we have not bought airline tickets yet. Rome is a group incentive trip. We are adding on days before and also after to make it a 16 day trip. We are open to flying in and out of different cities, we are Chicago based.

You could take a train from Rome to Orvieto and rent a car at the Hertz office across the street from the train station. It's just a 70 minute local train ride up there.
Orvieto's a great hilltown and about 90 minutes drive Siena area. I'd suggest staying in an agritursimo outside of San Gimignano and doing day trips from there. Then turn the rental car in at the Florence Airport and then see the city. Take a train to Venice and fly home from there.
Beware of those 6:00 am flights out of any Italian Airport. No reason to fly so early to a big European gateway airport only to sit around all morning. The North American flights leave early afternoon most often. We try to fly out of Italy after 9:00 a.m.

I like David’s plan but consider staying in one of the Chianti towns between Siena and Florence such as Castellina, Radda, Panzano or Greve instead of an agriturismo. .
