Where to get a guitar in Rome

My boyfriend is a guitarist and can't imagine being without one for the month we'll be in Italy and France. Our trip starts in Rome, and he's willing to go to the US equivalent of a pawn shop to buy a cheap guitar that he can leave behind on our way out of Paris. We will be driving from Rome to Paris, so don't need to worry much about it between the two cities. We may take a train excursion, but I don't suspect it would be as big a problem taking a guitar on a train.

Any ideas? Does Rome have pawn shops or something similar? Please help! This is his first trip to Europe and I've already convinced him he can't realistically fly one of his guitars from Miami to Rome. We're flying TAP and their space restrictions for overheads are way to tight for a guitar.

Thank you!

Your Music.
Located in Monteverde district on Via De Quattro Venti.
Google and call them to see if they have anything. Not far from the city center.
Most used instruments are sold on line however.
Your music has also a website for online sales.

Check with TAP to see what their policies are for taking musical instruments. You're probably right that you can't carry it on (unless you buy an extra ticket for the guitar, as professional musicians do), but it never hurts to look and ask.

You are correct that it's not a problem to bring a guitar on a train. You can take as much as you can carry, ut you will have to carry it yourself, so be sure you have packed light enough to have a free hand for the guitar.

"We will be driving from Rome to Paris"

Are you going to be using a rental car? If so, that likely will be a bit costly.

To elaborate on Ken's comments

be aware that driving in Italy each driver is required by law to have, in addition to their home driver license, an IDP issued, in Florida and in other US states at the AAA. You will have to have the full insurance coverage for the entire period because you are hiring in Italy. It could have been less expensive hiring the car in France and returning it to Italy. Watch out for the exceedingly expensive dreaded ZTLs and watch your speed.

Tolls in both Italy and France will eat your lunch.

Make sure to get a car with enough luggage area. Don't leave anything on display in the car, and you would be well advised to put the guitar in the luggage area before you get out of the car. People often watch parking areas and if they saw you storing a guitar they might be interested. Do it before you arrive at the parking area.

Good luck on your search finding a good instrument at a decent price.

I often fly out of Nashville, Tennessee (BNA), and there's always a number of people carrying on guitars (in cases) on every flight.

If your boyfriend has a favorite guitar, there's no reason he cannot carry it on a European vacation.

I'd just suggest he pack light otherwise.

There are quite a few travel size guitars that would fit in the overhead:

If he's just looking to keep up his dexterity, callouses, and technique he could check out:

I'm probably going to get both: The traveler ultra light for road trips and the Dreadneck (I play mostly acoustic) for carry-on travel. Then, every few days, find a music/guitar shop and go in and play awhile.
