Where to eat near Vatican City

Our hotel in July will be near the Roman Forum so when we spend a day in Vatican City I'd like to find a place for lunch and a place for dinner. Nothing too fancy or touristy. Preferably some great Italian/Roman cuisine and in a nice atmosphere that really feels, well, Italian!

I recommend the Ristorante dei Musei Vaticani- their green fabric sign says "Ristoranti Bar dei Musei Pizzeria" and it is right on the corner on the bottom floor of the building. Look for the green awning and those words. They have great Italian food of all sorts and the owners and staff are so friendly you'll think you just walked into a family reunion with you as the beloved prodigal returning home. It is directly across from the entrance to the Vatican museums.

Arlu at Borgo Pio 135, family run, toward the end of a street with lots of restaurants.

Well-known to tourists is Isola della Pizza, but still great food.

Reservations at either one are probably a good idea.

Ristorante/Pizzeria a few blocks from the Vatican for dinner: Piacere Molise. They barely speak English. Address 69 via Candia. It's my favorite restaurant in all of Rome. I can't count how many times I've eaten there, because I always stay in the Prati District, and on one trip ate there three times in one week. Save it for dinner, because it will be too far to walk for lunch. When you're finished with the Vatican Day, have dinner there and then taxi back to your hotel. Thursday is Gnocci night, so definitely order that if you're there on a Thursday.

Some people have evidently had a bad experience here in regards to service, but we ate several times at Hostaria Il Mozzicone on Via Borgo Pio and really liked the food. I especially remember the grilled veal chop, the involtini (beef rolls in red sauce,) and the pizzas. Nice outdoor area. Tourists and locals alike.

Alfredo e Ada. It is a liitle further from the Vatican - just across the Ponte Sant Angelo and about 5 minutes from Castel San Angelo. It only has 8 tables and no written menu. The waitress will explain the choices available in good English. Our family of 4 had beautiful chicken, veal, beef and pasta dishes. We also had a 1/2 litre of wine, water and two soft drinks. At the end of the meal the waitress brought out some lovely home made biscuits. When she saw we had finished our wine she insisted on giving us a half glass each to dip the biscuits in. By this stage I was a little bit nervous as I had not asked the prices when ordering. However, the total cost for this beautiful meal was 44Euro.

Just get there right on 12noon as it fills quickly and takes no bookings.
