Where to drop off rental car near Florence?

We are renting a car in Rome at FCO airport when we arrive on May 31, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. We plan to keep the car until we have a first night in Florence on June 8, 2016. Question: Where is the best place to DROP OFF the rental. We are staying in the Oltarno neighborhood of Florence, so I had anticipated that we would ride the train from wherever we drop it off but I think I am totally clueless at this point.

Should we drop it off at the Florence Airport? At a Florence Train Station (Santa Maria Novella) which I understand may be hard to too because of the driving in Florence. What about dropping it at a town outside of Florence - like Lucca, then riding the train into Florence? We anticipate using Autoeurope to rent (and anticipating we would get a Europcar rental.

Your input is appreciate. Where do we drop the car?

Several years ago we picked up and dropped off a car in Siena. Then took the train to Florence. It worked well in terms of being able to drive in and out of Siena easily. The only caveat is that we had to take a brief taxi ride between the train station and car rental. Your idea of not driving in Florence is a good one!

We've dropped off at the Florence airport before with no problems.

If you select Europcar as your rental company drop at:
NOVOLI OFFICE
Via Forlanini 2 (near the intersection/roundabout with via Di Novoli)
It's not too far from the airport but a bit closer to the city center. Very easy to reach if you come from the A11 freeway (Lucca).

Just come straight toward the city center (Centro), then shortly after the huge modern Hall of Justice (Palazzo Di Giustizia) turn right onto via Forlanini (Google Image "Palazzo Di Giustizia Firenze" to see what it looks like, you can't miss it).
After turning on via Forlanini, Drive to the end of the short street and U turn at the roundabout with via Di Novoli, and enter the underground garage on your right (see Europcar sign). Once returned, ask the rental agent to call you a taxi.

I worked with AutoEurope and came up with a solution. We are dropping the car off in Florence at Via Del Sansovino 53 - Hertz Car rental. It's a (relatively) straight shot from Lucca with just a few interchanges. I can handle that. It's also very near where we are staying that night, we can always take a cab if we need too.
It really got me to thinking about other drop off areas when the kind contributor on this forum mentioned the NOVOLI office - as these other locations were not optional choices when I booked on-line. But when I called and talked to someone in person they could do more research in depth of offerings.

Thanks again for everyone's input.

If you chose Hertz, then Via del Sansovino is the obvious choice.
If you come from Lucca on the A11, as you approach Florence look for the A1 junction, then take the A1 south direction ROMA (you are at the Firenze Nord entrance).
Once on the A1, just a few km later, take the very next exit called FIRENZE SCANDICCI.
Pay toll at the booth, then follow directions to CENTRO (Florence city center). Don't go toward Pisa or Livorno, as that takes you away from the city.
Go straight all the way toward the city center. You will drive on via del Sansovino after a few minutes, Hertz will be on your right as you go toward the city center.

Actually the Novoli office of Europcar is one of the choices in the AutoEurope website. However that location is for Europcar only, not Hertz.
