Where to drop off car before Rome?

We plan on renting a car to travel around tuscany and umbria for several days this september. It looks likely that we will pick up in Pisa but where should we drop off? Rome is our next and final stop before heading home. Thanks in advance. Aubrey

Its really easy to pick up and drop off at the Florence airport. Or if you must pick up in Pisa there might not be an extra charge for same country. I have done this a few times and then just hopped on the train to Rome.

Hi Aubrey, I just booked a car for pick up in Lucca and am dropping it off in Spoleto (south of Assisi). From Spoleto I will take the train to Rome, a trip of roughly 1 hr 45 min. You could also look for a drop off point on the ring road around Rome so you don't have to drive toward the centro. Your rental car company should be able to give you a list of drop off points. I wanted to drop mine in Assisi, but that was not an option, so I called them (AutoEurope) and they said Spoleto was the closest.
Good luck and have a great trip. Lisa

Drop off at the Rome airport - easy to take the Leonardo Express into the Termini station.

Depending On where you are Chiusi or Orvieto are popular spots to ditch the car and then train to Rome. Orvieto has more to offer as a destination if you want to sightsee a bit

There is a rental car agency at the train station in Orvieto. Don't remember which one. If you call AutoEurope to rent the car, they can tell you. Then you can visit this quaint hilltown and take the one hour train ride into Rome. Have fun exploring Tuscany. Try and get a GPS and Michelin map to help you navigate around the area. Also make sure you obtain your International Driver's License at your local AAA office. It costs $15 and does not require a test.

Aubrey, there are two rental agencies in Orvieto - Avis and Hertz. AutoEurope does work through both of these. For other options (Chiusi, Viterrbo, Civitavecchia, or Rome) you might look at this link. As mentioned, don't forget to get your International Driving Permit. If you are looking to use a GPS, you may have to bring your own if you are planning to drop-off in a different location than where you picked up. Many of these vendors are independent franchises and they like to keep their GPS cars - more revenue for them! So do check the rental agreement to insure you can drop a GPS car of at a different location.
