where to buy wine?

I know this seems like a silly question, but can't find the answer in RS book. Where do you buy wine by the bottle to enjoy in your room? Liquor store... wine store .... grocery store ??? We are booking some places with terraces or balconies and I dream of enjoying a glass of wine while taking in the view of Italy. Thanks

You'll find wine shops all around. If they speak English, ask for some recommendations and have a price in mind so they can steer you to the right type. If you have wine at restaurants that you like, write it down so you can find something similar to enjoy later.

I am going to try Vino SFUSO shops while in Italy this May. I have not tried them before so I cannot tell you what they are like. It seems that they do "draft" wine in bulk and will fill containers for you. Most will offer free samples so you can decide what you like best!

It is. There is some place to buy wine in Italy on every street. Hard to miss. There are also places that sell wine in bulk. You either bring your own jug or they will sell you one. And you can bring it back for a refill. Try a sample to see if it is to your liking. This will be relatively young wines meant to drunk within a couple of days. Sort of your daily wine approach.

That's a great idea. Do you just bring in an empty wine bottle to fill or is it some special container that you purchase from them?

Any supermarket. However inside historical centers supermarkets are not ubiquitous (due to lack of space for big stores). Inside historical centers there will be however plenty of specialized small shops, thousands of them, including wine shops, and also some "miniature" supermarkets. I don't think you'll be able to walk 100mt without spotting a place that sells wine.

Whatever you do do not buy expensive or nonlocal wine! Enjoy what the locals drink. In some ways it is part of the local culture. Frankly I am suspicious of anything over 8 or 9 euro. And had an amazing Umbrian Sangiovese that was only 5 euro! I can now get it here in New Jersey. Alla salute!

When we arrived tired at one hotel where we had a sea-view balcony, we just bought a bottle of wine from the hotel bar. You can also probably do this at any bar.

Great advice on where to buy wine...You might tuck a corkscrew in your bag if you are checking baggage, or buy one with your wine. We've been foiled by the lack of a cavatappi more than once. :-) I now also pack two tiny stemless glasses as I hate to drink wine out of a plastic cup.
