Where to buy a great picnic in Lucca

Can anyone suggest someplace inside the city walls (or near the train station) to buy the makings of a picnic lunch in Lucca? How about a nice piazza with benches to eat it on?

There are a number of sandwich shops--look for piadina (piadinera may be in the shop description), wonderful little grilled sandwiches. We got some (don't remember the place, but I remember the sandwich--artichoke, arugula, cheese, and divine) and went up onto the city walls where there are many benches and nice views.

The top of the wall surrounding the old town is perfect for walking, biking and relaxing - more unique than a piazza, and you can access it as you walk from the train station or at several “on ramps” after you pick up lunch.

Pizza da Felice is popular if you just want to pick up a slice of pizza, as another option.

Good suggestions. Thanks. Any options/ alternatives for buying just some bread, cheese and salami?

Inside the walls there are two Carrefour Expresses. One is at Via Calderia, 7. The other, as well as a Simply Market, are by Via del Moro, 6. Additionally, there is Ottrofrutta Luca Centro, P.za del Salvatore, 5. You should be able to get the makings for a lunch at any of them.

I don't know Lucca, but one challenge with asking for specific shops by name ot location, is we don't know what survived Covid. Also, as handy as the Carrefour is, I would keep an eye out for small shops with locally prepared picnic makings. Have you checked a walking route on Google Maps and then looked to see if you can search deli or grocery Nearby?

There’s a wonderful bakery (I learned the difference between a bakery & a pastry shop during my Lucca cooking class) on one of the main streets leading to the cathedral. The overhead gold writing on the shop glass says “Forno a Vapore”. But those are the historic signs, so it’s not necessarily the current shop name. There’s also a traditional cheese & meat shop nearby as well as a veggie shop. They were all very cordial to me with my elementary Italian tourist language.

The bakery Jean mentioned is at address Via Santa Lucia, 20. The full name is Forno a vapore Amedeo Giusti. Seems you have plenty of options.

If you happen to be there on market day head to the market. The ones I have been to have all had a good selection of food suitable for a picnic. Often times they have prepared food too.
