Where to Base - Two weeks in Puglia/Salento Mid-September 2026

This is super helpful! Is there a way to find listings of masseries? I know there's Booking and other large sites, but want to know if Italians prefer an alternative. Would gladly take any recommendations on specific masseries as well. Our budget is flexible, ideally under US$200/night on average with the idea we could stay below budget some nights and splurge on others.

Only been once - for 11 days in 2024.

My first thought is don’t skip over Bari. We were there just 24 hours and I wish we had stayed longer. The history was amazing. We ate well. I wish we had spent more time to find music.

I will toss out an idea that you probably haven’t considered. Use a portion of your two weeks to travel by bike tour. We did a self-guided tour though https://www.pugliacycletours.com/. Our self guided tour was two nights in Alberobello, one in Monopoli, one in Ostuni, one in Martano, one in Otranto and one in Lecce. We added two more nights in Lecce at the back end of the bike tour and one in Alberobello at the front.

We briefly visited Matera as we rented a car to travel from Lecce to Naples, via the Cilento region.

Anyway, Puglia Cycle has a number of different guided and self-guided tours in Puglia, some of which begin in Matera. The region is relatively flat and e-bikes are available. Cycling gets you closer and more intimately connected to the land. Cycle days involved 3 to 4 hours on the bikes.

The self-guided trips are a lot cheaper than guided. They supply the bikes, book the hotels and arrange the luggage transfers. You just cycle, choose where to have lunch, stop to see towns, ruins or swim, and move at your own pace. Of course, the guides are local - the company is based in Polignano a Mare - and they probably add a worthy dimension and the added support (in case of a flat tire or whatever) may make a real difference for you. A van ride on our one rainy day would have made a real difference for us!

Fred, appreciate the recommendations. I'll try to book the first day/night in Bari, tho we'll be pretty tired after taking the redeye via Rome. My partner is not much for cycling on holiday, tho maybe we can do a 1-day tour if there are vineyard stops.

I can't speak to the Puglia/Salento region directly, but I wanted to share that we had a lovely stay at an Agri turismo just outside Greve and used it as our base to explore the Chianti region and visit Florence. We spent the entire 10 days in one stay. It was at a winery that offered dinner as well as breakfast.

It boils down to the type of experience you're after. If you like peace and quiet in the evenings, the Agri turismo might be a good choice. If you want something a little more lively, then a town like Gallipoli might be better for you.

Happy travels! We'll be in Italy in October, splitting our time between Florence and Perugia, with part of the stay at an Agri turismo where we'll help them harvest olives and take cooking lessons.

Lecce, yeah, stay inside the walls so you can waddle home after dinner instead of driving.

We loved Masseria Montenapoleone, near Torre Canne — a lovely little seaside village where we could drive for dinner. The masseria had a small swimming pool, served great breakfasts, and was centrally located for day trips to Alberobello and the other trulli villages.

Once you decide where you are staying, I will be happy to give you a few ideas for restaurants...we've been to Puglia quite a few times, most recently last May..

We're planning a day in Bari, day in Matera, then the remaining 12 days hopping around Valle d'Itria, Lecce, and the both adriatic and ionian beaches of Salento. Definitely interested in any dining recommendations, we love experiencing culture thru food.

You have not mentioned if you want to drive to dinner, and a majority of masseria are going to be in the countryside, so decide that first. My spouse and I drink, so we always stay in town so we can walk to dinner. We do our exploring during the day. You could always choose one really special agriturismo and stay there however many days you would not get sick of eating dinner there. (Make sure they serve every night.) Places I’ve enjoy eating and staying multiple days are Matera, Monopoli, Lecce, Cisternino. It’s easy to get to the coast from all, but you’ll want a coastal stay too.

We're looking to stay in Bari and Matera (in Sassi unless there's a compelling reason to stay in the new town.

Valle d'Itria we're staying in a masseria near Locorotondo for 3 nights.

The remainder of the trip I am thinking of finding accomodations in Lecce. Explore Salento during the day and the city in the evening. We're comfortable driving to dinner, but I do like walking.

You mentioned just a night in Bari and Matera. I’d consider more in Matera. Bari I gave a night on two occasions and I was fine with that. Just make sure you get some longer stays in so you are not always on the move.

Are there some highlights you would recommend in Matera? I was considering adding a 2nd night in Matera. My goal was to move around a bit the first week (3 accommodations - Bari, Matera, Locorotondo) and then getting a week-long accommodation in Lecce to explore Salento.

I just like Matera itself, plus the surroundings are very beautiful: a cool tour of abandoned Craco, a gorge hike in Laterza, plus you can visit Altamura, which I missed but is famous for bread. The food is just different enough in Matera to make it worth more than a day.
My visits are just a tad too long ago to give restaurant recs, but Eksrunchy knows this area well and will get you sorted. We stayed at Toretta ai Sassi and their restaurant recommendations were always great.

In Lecce, I loved loved loved Roof Barocco suites. You get a basket for breakfast that is more than you can eat. We would take it off with us for the day for snacks.

Hi Christopher, I’ve stayed in the Puglia region three times 2024-2026. Everyone has their own preferences so take this as just my opinion. I’ve stayed in Bari three times - two of those to attend the San Nicola Sagra festival and my recent stay for one night since I was flying late afternoon from Budapest. Of all of the places to stay in the Puglia region, I would prefer elsewhere, especially since you will have a car.

The idea of staying in the countryside is great. Choose one where you’re staying in a trullo. Waking up & seeing the interior of the cone roof is special. Matera is amazing & so unique! Yes, to staying two nights there. I loved my cave room & even selected my dates based on their availability: B&B, Palazzo Degli Abati. The view from the breakfast/evening tables, plus the room terrace was breathtaking, and it was very easy to find the B&B after exploring during the day.

Polignano a Mare is in my Top 5 cities to stay in Italy. : ). I’ve stayed in 50 cities in Italy - 10 of those in this region. Going on an early morning walk in the old town lanes & down at the water, a boat ride seeing the jugged caves coastline and having dinner at tiny, intimate Mint Fresca (reservations a month ahead) is a perfect day. 2024, 2025 & 2026 included a few nights each time in Polignano a Mare.

I haven’t been south of Lecce just because I travel by train & occasionally a bus, and public transportation gets trickier in that area. So I can’t share any recommendations in the tip of the Salento. I’ve stayed in Matera, Trani, Bari, Alberobello, Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Lecce, Ostuni, Monopoli, Polignano a Mare. For your younger age, I would say Matera, somewhere in the countryside, Polignano a Mare, and Lecce with beach day trips. (If you don’t stay in PoM, stop in during the evening vs. mid-day.)
