Where should I fly into

I'm going to be in Italy in Novemeber, and I'm starting to look at plane tickets. Here's my dilemma. I want to start my trip in Sorento and work my way north. I know the Naples airport is closer, but if I fly into Rome, I could cut down on 5 hours of flying and only have 1 flight connection instead of 2. So what I'm asking is, is the longer trip from Rome to Sorrento a lesser evil than 5 hours in transit via plane? Hope that makes sense!

Fly to FCO, train to Naples then to Sorrento, however....here's your dilemma...what will be OPEN in Sorrento and the coast in November, let along with the weather? Better check where you are targeting to stay before you go south. We've done Rome and Tuscany in November twice in November and it was lovely, Don't wish to put a wrench in your plans, however, don't think much will be happening in Sorrento and area that month.

If you fly into Rome you would still have to get to Sorrento which will take at least 2 hours if you are able to just walk on a train that is at the platform. If not, add at least another hour. If you fly into Naples you still have a half hour train ride to get to Sorrento plus you have to get to the train station from the airport. I'm not familiar with that airport so can't tell you how long it would take to get to the train station or even how to get to the train station. I think I would still fly into Naples. The time difference is not that much and it will save some back tracking on the train. Donna

Also factor in the time of day for the Rome-Sorrento trip. Will one of the fast trains be availble at Termini by the time that you get there from FCO? It is about 1hr from Naples station to Sorrento on what amounts to DART. I don't know how late the mighty Circumvesuviana runs but its schedule is on the web as is Trenitalia's

Pam:
Can't comment on where to fly, but to allay any weather fears, it should be in the 60s in November, maybe even a little warmer early in the month. Some sites close, but that is easily researched. You can still see Pompeii, Naples, hike the Sorrentine Peninsula,go to Amalfi, etc.

I fly down to Naples (NAP) and take the bus ( Curreri Viaggi ) from the airport to Sorrento ( 10E). It will take 1:15. Cheaper and faster. Check it out.
