If you do want to buy one at the airport and you're on a flight from the U.S., you can also try the Smartphone shop down the main hall to your right after you exit the baggage claim area. It's on the left, before you get to the passage to the train station.
Good luck! They don't want to sell SIM chips to tourists at the Rome airport.
We got ours at a small electronics shop in a nearby town, that sold all of the various brands. (look for the signs in the windows.)
Make sure you get someone that speaks English to help set your phone up, that you learn how to check your minutes, that you understand how voicemail works, and lastly, verify that your phone will both send and receive calls.
And ensure that you buy more than $5.00 worth of minutes. I could not understand why my phone would not call out, but people could call me. I was out of minutes!
