I'm partial to the Campo di Fiori area; right in the center of all the sites, a wonderful atmosphere and oh....the market every morning! Plenty of eateries and places to shop for eating in. I just google "rome apartment accommodations" and plenty of agencies will come up. Find an apartment you like and go for it! Being near a metro stop is a plus, as well, although Camp di Fiori is not. Happy travels!

I agree with Lorraine and also like staying in the Campo di Fiori area of Rome.

One option for apartments is VRBO (Vacation Rental by Owner). www.vrbo.com

I also love the Campo de Fiori location. It can be very noisy, which is something you should bear in mind.

You could try www.slowtrav.com which has a large number of apartment rental reviews. 9 people for only 3 nights may be a bit of a problem, depending on the time of the year and how many apartments you need and whether you want them very close together.

One thing to be aware of is that apartments in central Rome tend to be very small - so although it may say it sleeps 4- 6 people, it may only be 40-45 m sq, which is pretty tiny. Frequently the numbers it sleeps will include sofa beds - this may or may not bother you of course.

Another vote for the Campo Fiori area--the restaurants in that area are great and the morning market is a must see place. We have not stayed in Trastevere but an apartment near the Tiber could be a good option at the right price.

Everyone has their preference and for different reasons. We always stay (4 times, a fifth this Fall) in the Termini area for a number of reasons -- convenience to the transportation hub of Rome and walkable from the Train station - very important to us. A little better value in the hotels, and some very nice local restaurants in the area, and, in some ways, a little less touristy. The drawback is that you are little farther from the main tourist sites which means you need to walk an extra ten minutes to the center of the sites. That is unimportant to us. Just a little more exercise to walk off all the pasta we consume. It is all personal preference -- no single answer.

Lisa,

One possibility you might try is www.the-beehive.com, as they operate not only a small Hostel but also some apartments (owned by a young American couple).

They're located in the area of Termini station, and while it might not have the "character" of some of the other neighborhoods, it's hard to beat the convenience of being so close to Trains, Metro, Buses, Tours, Taxi's, etc. I quite enjoyed my last stay in the Termini area.

As you've only got three days, they might be your best bet. AFAIK, some of the other apartments require a slightly "longer" stay.

Good luck and happy travels!

I agree with Frank about Termini. The prices are much better and while some would say it's far from the sites, you're near the metro and the busses and can get anywhere fairly quickly. We've stayed there and enjoyed it. We've also done some convent stays in Rome that were nice and this May we'll be staying in an Apartment that came highly recommended on the Slowtravel website.

I recently stayed in Campo di Fiori and loved it a lot (www.casadifiori.com). However, some points to note:

(1) very very very noisy at night, and in these hotter months when you want to leave the windows open, this can be a problem

(2) not close to any metros. While most everything is in walking distance, sometimes it is easier to take the tube, especially with large families with different walking capabilities, and kids who may get tired quickly. There are lots of buses but i am always nervous to use a bus!

I also recently stayed close to the Termini, at a lovely hotel Bettoja Hotel Atlantico. While not atmospheric at all, and a bit further from the historic centre, as everyone above says the metro is close, and from there you can get anywhere.

Also a vote for the Termini area...not the prettiest part of town perhaps but so convenient to all transportation that we liked it a lot. Looking back I realized that no matter where we stayed in any city, we left our hotel early and returned late after a full day of touring. In the end, it really didn't matter what the hotel neighborhood was like; if we could get there and back easily and find restaurants nearby it fit the bill to a T. And Termini-with a capital T- did just that. Happy travels.
