Where is best place to pick up rental car in Milan?

Hello,
I am planning our itinerary for central and northern Italy for May 2025. This will be for me and my husband. We plan on using a combination of rental cars and trains, and my husband will be doing the driving.

Right now we plan on flying to/from Milan. On arrival we will spend 3 nights in Milan. Then we will pick up a rental car for Cinque Terre and Tuscany. Where would be the least stressful place to pick up our rental car? I want to avoid the ZTL's, of course, so I'm looking for the easiest drive out of Milan. At first I was thinking of returning to the airport to pick up our car but I believe that's an hour's ride so that would be time consuming. Would it make more sense to get our rental car at the train station? What is it like driving out of Milan from the train station?

If it makes more sense, I could re-arrange our itinerary and fly into Florence and home from Milan. Upon arrival we would then spend 4 nights in Florence, then either get the rental car in Florence and drive to Siena, our next destination, or take the train to Siena and pick up our car there.

Thank you!
Karen

I agree with ChristineH.

Better yet, pick up the car in La Spezia after your visit in the CT area. You really don’t need it in the CT.

Thank you to ChristineH and travel4fun.

I agree that what you said makes sense. A friend of mine suggested we drive from Milan to Manarola in the CT and park our car at the community parking lot. That is what she did. She said that whenever they used the CT Express it was standing room only and they were happy they weren't on it with their luggage. We are in our 70's, and the idea of being on a train, even for a short ride, standing with our luggage is not appealing to us. So that's why we were thinking of driving to Manarola. We are ok with leaving our car in the parking lot for a couple days. What are your thoughts on this?

If you are going to the Cinque Terre after Milan, you should not rent a car in Milan, you should go by train as a car is useless at the Cinque Terre and keeping it parked will cost you 25 euro a day. The parking lot in Manarola is so small (no more than 80 spots) that I'm not even sure you'll find a spot in high season. You might still need to park at Riomaggiore or Monterosso, which have larger parking garages/lots and then take the train. It's not a "community" parking lot, it's a pay parking lot. This is an image of the Manarola parking lot. Where you see that couple next to the shack is where the parking pay machine is. There are also a few spots of free parking on the road, but I've never been able to find a free spot (the free ones are the first to go).

Rather rent the car after you leave the Cinque Terre. Take the train to La Spezia and pick up your car in La Spezia to drive to Tuscany. Most rental offices at La Spezia are at the cruise port, so you will need to take a taxi from the La Spezia Centrale train station to the port.

Hi Roberto,
I really appreciate your very helpful reply. I know the parking lot is a pay parking lot. My friend referred to it as a community lot because you don't have to be a resident to park there.

I do like everyone's suggestion of taking the train to La Spezia, and then picking up the rental car at La Spezia when we leave the CT. However, I am concerned about taking our luggage on to the CT Express train, especially if it's standing room only. As I said, we are in our 70's so the idea of standing in a jam-packed train with our luggage is not appealing. Am I worrying too much about this? My husband's carryon is a backpack, and I have visions of him accidentally hitting people with it while standing. Is it possible to take a taxi from La Spezia to Manarola? Or would it be easier to stay in Riomaggiore since it has a larger parking garage? Although Manarola looks nicer to me.

I appreciate the photo of the parking lot in Manarola. It's helpful to see what we are talking about.

...I am concerned about taking our luggage on to the CT Express train, especially if it's standing room only. .... Am I worrying too much about this?...... Absolutely. It is rare for every train to be that packed. We have not found it so. Second, tell your husband to take off his backpack and put it by feet it standing in a crowd car so he doesn't hit anyone. And -- it is much safer as few pickpocket crawl around on the floor looking for backpacks. We are in our 80s and don't have any problem with the trains or luggage as long as you keep it to single rolling bag and maybe a shoulder bag. We have been visiting Italy since 72 with no problems.

I've driven to both Manarola and Riomaggiore many times, both with car and motorcycle (no problem parking with a motorcycle), always coming from La Spezia. Riomaggiore is a bit closer, but not by much. From the station it's probably 20-25 min drive to Riomaggiore, maybe an extra 5 min to Manarola. Riomaggiore has a larger multi-story parking lot, you can see it in this image, the ramp and all the yellow buildings on the left are the multistory parking lot. However if you park there, and stay in Manarola, you still need to take the train. I've never experienced the train so full that I had to stand too close to other passengers, actually I think there were always seats available. However I know that ''sardines' type situations occur when cruise ships are in town at La Spezia and everybody on the ship goes there at the same time. Also, although I used to go practically every year, I haven't done so in over 10 years. However another thing to consider is that the road to those towns, especially the last mile or so, is very narrow (one lane wide although is a two way road), so you have to be skilled enough to negotiate the car in very narrow spaces or you'll scratch the walls along the way. It is up to you, but if you can do without a car, I would. The most logical choice is to travel by train there. Taxicabs from/to the La Spezia station are an option, and probably cheaper than the 25 or 30 euro a day for the parking. From the station to there is probably 10 miles (20+ min drive) so I doubt a taxi would charge more than 30 or 40 euro each way. But as I said the trains aren't always full. If you leave whichever town you are in the morning, before the Cruiseders arrive, trains shouldn't be full going to La Spezia. In my experience at that time it's mostly school kids going to school in La Spezia. In terms of towns where to stay, I never stayed overnight. I rented a vacation home every year in Forte dei Marmi, so I commuted the 45 min there when I needed, parked at Riomaggiore or Monterosso, then shuttle btw towns by train. To me all those villages look the same after a while. Corniglia is on the hill, so I didn't care much for it because I was interested in the beach, and the only town with a beach is Monterosso, which is also a bit larger and with more choice of restaurants. Riomaggiore was the easiest to reach for me, so that is where I preferred to park, although I've parked also in Monterosso, which has two large lots. If you come from Milan, then Monterosso is faster to reach because you exit the A12 freeway at Levanto. Vernazza is the most famous, and popular, but it's also the most crowded especially when the cruises are at La Spezia.

Do yourself a favour: Take the train!

I would not drive from Milan to CT, as others have said.

You will not use the car in CT anyway. Take the train! Driving in Italy can be challenging with tight lanes, parking, and your lack of familiarity with the area and local laws.

Please train!

Many thanks again to Roberto, and also to Frank and Born a Travelin Man! You have me sold! We will take the train to Manarola. I admit I was worried about what we would do if the parking lot in Manarola was full. My friend lucked out when she was there but we might not be so lucky.

Roberto, thanks for the reminder about the cruise ships. I will check online before we make reservations to see if I can plan our dates in CT around the cruise ship schedules. That will make a big difference.

Frank, so happy to hear you are in your 80's and still traveling and using trains! I hope we will be as lucky as you!

To Roberto and everyone else who was so helpful,
I have the cruise schedule for La Spezia for May 2025. I know what days the cruise ships will be in port, so I will plan our arrival at La Spezia for one of the days there won't be any cruise ships in port. I have several choices so I have some flexibility. Thank you!
