Where do you love to stay in Florence? Lodging fell through..ack!

Hi,

My friend and I are staying 3 nights in Florence coming up in two weeks. We thought we had an airbnb but it fell through. Does anyone have a recommendation for lodging (apartment, B&B or possibly hotel) that is a much loved place to stay? I am hoping for a place that has a sense of place, history and beauty. And obviously the usual niceties like clean, etc.

We are planning to walk around the historic district. Seems like everything in this area is about a 15 minute walk max even from the Duomo to Ponte Veccio, so almost any neighborhood would do.

I'm bleary eyed from looking at tiny pictures of lodging online. I would much appreciate a recommendation from a RS traveler.

Many thanks,
Beth

We stayed at The Academy Hostel. Really close to the Duomo, extremely friendly and very clean. We had a twin room with a private bath. It was so cool. The room had an arched ceiling. Lots of room too not super cramped like some places. Best of luck. Too bad about your Air BnB.

We stayed at La Scaletta Hotel, a block from the Ponte Vecchio, south of the river. Check out their website and chat room. Staff are delightful, the location is perfect, ask for a room with a view of Boboli Gardens. You can easily walk to all of the major sights and the staff will tell you where THEY go for pizza, gelato, and where their families go to eat out. Tell them their friends from KS sent you. Ask for Sheila or Sarah if you use the chat room.

Thank you for your suggestions. Those two locations are both booked. I will keep looking.

Beth,

At this late date and considering this is getting into the peak tourist season, you may have to take what you can find, whether it has a sense of "history and beauty" or not.

A few places you could try.....

Good luck!

It's just a place to sleep -- see what's available on your dates in your price range (I have used Venere.com and booking.com) Charm is nice, but not essential.

We stayed at Hotel Dali down the street from the Duomo (with bath down the hall.) It had its own charm.

Try Hotel Bigallo around the corner from the Duomo. A couple of blocks closer to the train station is Hotel Paris.

We stayed in Hotel Meridiana in Florence. It's a bit of a walk but easy access by bus. On a quiet street and the rooms overlooking the little garden are very quiet and restful. Nice little restaurants and grocery store not far away.

Beth,

Try Rental Apartments in Florence. We'd use this company for "apartments" in Rome two other times and found them to be very professional. The company has a wide range of apartments in various districts. Good luck!

Hotel Giglio on Via Cavour 85. It's a wee bit off the beaten but we loved it and it's very close to the convent of San Marco. It's a small, very friendly family operation, and on the 2nd floor of the building it's in.

Hotel Caravaggio seems to have rooms available in early June. They are clean rooms with clean, largish bathrooms, extensive breakfast. We liked it just fine.

I think I stayed at the Meridiana as well... it was quite nice. But, at this point I would go to booking.com and take whatever is available... not too many choices at this point. Good luck.

We stayed at Hotel Guerrato. If you want history, this is it. It's close to Ponte Vecchio.

We stayed at Mulino di Firenze in 2013. It is a fabulous place. It is outside the city, along the river - as I recall a cab was around 15 euro, but the hotel also has a shuttle service several times throughout the day that was complimentary - but the location and grounds are amazing. It was a retreat. Restaurant was top notch, bar was great, service impeccable. We would stay there again in a heartbeat. http://www.mulinodifirenze.com/en/

I stayed at the Hotel Panama on Via 20 Settembre - nice family-run place, reasonably priced, about a 20 minute walk to the Accademia.

We were there last week and had the most fabulous experience with the Hotel David. It is in the Oltrarno. Bus stops 4 times an hour out the front door and delivers you within a block of the Duomo. I have always stayed in the midst of Florence but this was a gem. Beautiful outdoor area with free HH every night. So many extras offered and very helpful staff.

We stayed at Hotel dei Macchiaioli and thought the breakfast room roof was stunning. Great service and clean rooms for a good price. It's close to the Duomo, though, so will likely be sold out.
