From Florence my husband and I will be traveling to home-base in Spello then Montepulciano. We plan to rent a car for our week in Umbria and Tuscany. My thought is to train from Florence to somewhere in Umbria we may not otherwise visit; interesting and large enough to enable us to pick up a rental car enroute to Spello. Any suggestions for where that might be? Orvieto seems to be a logical drop off location as we head to Rome. I so appreciate the tips and information shared on the forums! Cheers, Debbie

If you don’t want to drive the 2+ hours from Florence, you can take the train to Perugia and rent there. All major rental car companies are near the station.
From Montepulciano, you could return the car at Chiusi-Chianciano station. All major companies are there. Orvieto is further south and only Hertz is present there.
Check www.autoeurope.com or their affiliate www.kemwel.com for rates.
(They don’t do business with the Hertz franchise in Orvieto, I think because of complaints about that office).
