When & which legs of my train trip to validate?

Hello -
I have a three leg trip from Monterosso - Pisa, Pisa - Florence SMN, Florence SMN - Bologna. The first leg has assigned seats (Intercity train, 1st class). The second from Pisa - Florence SMN (Regionale train, 2nd class) does not. The third from SMN - Bologna has assigned seats (Frecciarossa train). I have already purchased the tickets online & will have them printed before I get to the station.

Which of the three legs need to be validated? I am pretty sure legs 1 and 3 do not need to be, since they have assigned seats. Is this correct?

I assume leg #2 needs to be, since seats are not assigned? If this is the case, where should I validate it, at the onset of my trip at Monterosso or just before getting on that train from Pisa to SMN?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi. You are correct; any ticket with assigned seats (i.e. your legs 1 and 3) does not need to be validated. In general, a regional ticket needs to be validated. However, if you buy a regional ticket online, it may come 'pre-validated'; i.e. already has a specified date and time, so wouldn't need to be validated again. If in doubt, no harm in sticking it in the machine. If so, do it in Pisa just before you board the train. Enjoy your trip!

PJackson,

before I get to the station.

correct?

If you purchased your tickets online, none of them need to be validated prior to boarding the train(s).

Bob is correct in saying that Regional train tickets need to be validated prior to boarding the train, however, in your case,
since you've purchased your tickets online, they are already prevalidated.

Regional train tickets purchased online come with restrictions explained here:http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en/Purchase/Regional-online-ticket-and-passes

You only validate tickets that will fit in the validation machine. These tickets will be bought at the station or at a travel agency snd will say "Convalidare" at the top.
