We are flying into Milan arriving the morning of Friday, May 4th. We're planning on heading straight to Florence upon arrival. Since there's always a chance of flight delay, wondering if it's best to buy train tickets upon arrival rather than in advance. Thanks.

Yes, buy when you arrive. The advance ticket discounts usually are not big enough to risk it if your flight is delayed. Not sure if you can buy Trenitalia tickets at the airport train station ticket window since that train is run by a different company, but there is a Trenitalia ticket machine there if you have chip credit card.
