When to book in Advance - Bus? Train?

I am debating how much we need to make reservations prior to traveling.

It would be nice to have some flexibility, while it would also be terrible to find a train had been booked solid. Has anyone ever had trouble booking short train trips? How about busses?

Any preference between busses/trains in Tuscany?

Here is the list of connections we will be making - some we have already decided on booking and have been omitted, FYI.

Venice --> Verona
CT/La Spezia --> Pisa
Pisa --> Lucca
Lucca --> Florence
Florence --> Montalcino (bus)
Montalcino --> Siena (bus)
Siena --> Rome (bus/train)

Thanks!

if you look at the trenitalia site you'll see that there are MANY trains running on these routes each day. Unless you're traveling on a major holiday, you are unlikely to find them booked solid.

You can go to the station an hour before your trip to buy train tickets if you like. They never sell out except on the busiest holidays and with so many trains a day you will always be able to get on one. You won't be able to buy tickets in advance before you get to Italy unless you use a reseller like raileurope which charges a fee. If you go that route understand that for all trips you must still make a seat reservation which will cost an additional 10 euros per seat per trip.

Just to emphasize what the first replier said, you'll want to be aware that the Italian train website, Trenitalia, rejects all US credit cards. We don't know why, it's just the way it is and has been for a couple of years.
