When is the best time to climb brunelleschi's dome

What do you think is the best time to climb the Duomo?

I am about to purchase my tix for early March and am thinking it would be great to time my climb so that I am at the top at sunset.

Thoughts?

Thanks

We went first thing in the morning (lined up before it opened) and it was fantastic. We could climb right up -- no delays -- because there were only 10 or so people ahead of us. I honestly can't imagine what it would be like to be stuck on the stairs due to large crowds, but it probably wouldn't be pleasant. The early morning views were great. Unless you know there won't be crowds later in the day, I'd suggest this as a morning activity. And after you climb down you can reward yourself with an espresso and something yummy from the bakery -- as you'll have earned it!

Ruth,

I totally understand and appreciate that insight. I could easily do those stairs in under 20min. with no distractions/people in the way. Also, I'm not a morning person, esp. jet lagged....hmmm...a conundrum. but as of now there are still tons of available times for early march, so I may just hold off to book for a couple more weeks

The “best” time to climb the dome is definitely first thing in the morning, so you don’t have lots of slower people ahead of you. That would have driven me crazy.

A better place to watch the sunset is Piazza Michaelangelo, from which you can watch the sunset ON the Duomo, rather than from the Duomo. Or maybe Giotto’s Bell Tower if you wish to be in the center of Florence (although I don’t know what direction it is from the Duomo, maybe possibly in the shadow at sunset).

Keep in mind that the tour buses start arriving around 9-9:30am and the duomo area pretty much stays packed until at least 5pm or so. If you are looking for sunset, I would suggest booking for 5pm reservation at least. Early March sunset in Florence will be between 6pm-6:15pm. Duomo closes at 7pm weekdays and 5pm on Saturdays, 4pm Sundays. So if Sat or Sun, no sunset view.

Thanks Marc

I already did some of that math and would have intended booking an entry time around 5/5:30p.m. Is it as crowded in March as any other time?

The earliest I have been is in early April. Crowds are somewhat thinner. I wonder if coronavirus has stifled some of the Chinese tourism.
