When is Rome-when to visit Pompei?

We'll be arriving in Rome from CT on a Wednesday, flying out on the next Monday. We definitely want to do Pompei as a day trip. With the Roma pass being three consecutive days, it, therefore, looks like our options would be: A-go to Pompei on Thursday-better train choice but we'll be disoriented for Rome and leaving us Fri/Sat/Sun for Rome sites, or B: save Pompei for Sunday with a likely 6:45 AM train departure and fewer return choices and then a quick pack, brief sleep and up early for a trip to the airport for our 9:00 return to the USA. We'd appreciate insight or opinions.

I would go on Thursday. Pompeii is more crowded on the weekends so I always go during the week. You'll have more train options also. Donna

Keep in mind that whatever day you go to Pompeii it will be a LONG day. We are independent travelers, but several years ago we used enjoyrome.com for a no frills, down and back tour. They delivered us at the Scavi around 11 a.m. and we departed around 3 p.m. They did not provide a guide, but you can hire a guide at the gate or rent an audio tape guide. We were in an air conditioned tour bus with a bathroom break both down and back. Pompeii is immense with few amenities inside the exhibit. Buon viaggio,

We seem to have a similar plan- also arriving in Rome from Florence on a Weds, and flying out the following Monday.
We are not planning on purchasing a Roma pass, so are opting to go to Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius on the Friday.

I'm also visiting Rome this year. When doing my research reading, Ostia Antica is 30 minutes train ride from Rome and is highly rated on trip advisor. I am planning of visiting Ostia Antica on my trip. I have been to Pompei and it is indeed fantastic; my visit was part of a bus tour and I wished I had longer to just roam around without the guide. Have a great trip.
