I am in Naples for a quick break, staying at a cheap hotel by the train station. You get what you pay for. Even though this place had decent reviews on TripAdvisor I'm not sure I concur. Anyway... There is no room safe, and I have various items with me that I don't want to risk unwillingly donating to staff (tablet, etc.). What do you folks do in these situations -- take the risk? Drag everything around with you while you're out sightseeing? I thought about taking my bag over to the left luggage at the train station at least for the morning while they're cleaning the rooms. I assume that's more secure? Their web site makes no guarantees about security. Thoughts?
In hotel rooms, when leaving for the day, I stash everything I don't need with me in my luggage. Then I lock the luggage. My theory is that loose things can easily be stolen, but an entire bag leaving the premises would be too obvious.
When a hotel doesn't have a safe, I simply use a money belt for cash, cards, and passport. For larger items I sometimes lug along this pacsafe portable safe: http://pacsafe.com/travelsafe-12l-portable-safe
Any thoughts on whether left luggage places are a secure solution?
Bryan, With larger items like my Netbook and Camera gear, I normally just leave them locked inside my Backpack and Camera bag. Items like my Passport, credit cards, etc. are kept with me in a Money Belt. So far that method has been quite adequate. Even if there are unscrupulous members of the hotel staff, if they don't see any valuables, it's unlikely they'll start breaking into luggage as that would bring a lot of "unwanted attention" from hotel management and the Police. Cheers!
Thanks. I didn't bring a lock with me. Did think about just burying the bag under the extra blankets in the wardrobe. Maybe I can pick up a lock someplace in the station.
We were just at the Naples train station on Sunday. That entire area is chaotic - if not a bit sketchy!!! Stay safe!
You can buy a lock is many little shops all through Italy. Especially hardware stores.
Bryan, I'm assuming your luggage has some provision for locking (ie: tabs on the zippers or whatever)? You should be able to buy a small Padlock easily. Ask your hotel where the nearest hardware store or Locksmith is located. I always travel with both TSA luggage locks as well as a more robust and high security Padlock for Hostel Lockers. Good luck!
I've stayed in the train station area for years and have never had a problem. I never use hotel safes, have occasionally left camera and tablet in my unlocked but zipped luggage and nothing has ever gone missing. I normally use these items while I'm out anyway. Buy a lock from a newsstand or tobacco shop at the train station if you can't find one on your hotel's street.
