Hi there,
I heard that Venice was going to start placing $$fines on tourists who have wheeled luggage because it's destroying stairs/walkways. Have you heard about this? I was planning to take a small wheeled suitcase.
It was only talk and the object was the larger kiosks loaded by vendors to sell goods to pedestrians (tourists). There is no fine for tourists with luggage.
Urban story. Never considered but there was a brief discussion about banning vendor carts with steel wheels or something like that. Was picked up by a London newspaper (I think), lost something in the translation, and spead to the whole world as wheel luggage. Pull your bag. Your are safe.
Just got back from Venice the other day......no problems with wheeled luggage, there were a lot of us using them.
Oh, boy. Here we go again. It's not true.
Nothing with wheels is allowed in Venice. No cars, bikes, etc. are allowed.
Only floating devices are allowed.
Such as:
boats and gondolas,
Police jet skiis,
vaporetti, and
floating suitcases
Let's see how far this rumor gets.
Lord, the rumors...I haven't heard that one yet, but it's nice it's put to rest before I ever heard it lol
They wanted to ban wheels and enforce fines but it hasn't happened. Good news for us. Wheels are fine.
I think that Jenn is misinformed because it only became about wheels on luggage after the press didn't bother to check their story and sent wrong information around the world. It was never about luggage.
Giving a worrying urban myth oxygen only allows it spread further.
To be absolutely crystal clear about this:
There has never been a ban on wheeled luggage in Venice.
There has never been a plan to ban wheeled luggage in Venice.
The have never been fines for rolling luggage in Venice and there have never been any plans to do so.
Take your luggage with you. Just pick it up when you go over bridges, and for my ears and those of your fellow travelers don't drag it down the other side of bridges, banging as it hits each step. Carry it up, carry it down.
I am still trying to figure out how plastic wheels on a 20 - 25 lb piece of luggage are wrecking stones.
jkc: Have you read all the posts on this thread previous to yours?
JKC, they're not. Please read all the responses. Wheeled luggage has never been banned or proposed to be banned. It was rolling souvenir carts that they are trying to ban. It has nothing to do with luggage.

I was being sarcastic.
I mean really think about it, cheap plastic luggage wheels versus stone.....
JKC, you forgot to use the sarcastic font. (^_^)
