Hi Elysa, I spent a few days in Rome last December in a wheelchair, although I did have some limited mobility. We stayed in a ground floor apartment right next to Campo Di Fiori. Be sure to ask if there are any stairs in the apartment itself. Some of them have levels inside. We were able to get around in good time and ease to sites like Trevi, Pantheon, Navona but we taxied to the Borghese and Vatican and did a hop on/off bus for some other sites. Our situation was that my 16 year old daughter had to roll me and it was hard for her at times. It was brand new to us as I was in the w/c only due to an accident our first night there. The cobbled streets and some lack of sidewalk access took it's toll off and on. There's a taxi stand right at the Largo Argentina which is easy to get to from the CDF area. Many of the sites allowed free access to wheelchairs. I found the Vatican and most church sites to be especially helpful. It was even possible to ride a special elevator (not the public one) to the top of the church for that lovely view. We could not go through the Forum but were able to go inside the Colosseum. Other than that, I was able to access everything I had on our "to see" list. The Capuchin Crypt has a lot of stairs to get in, but I was determined to get up them and someone helped us carry the chair. Some things you will have to just go with the flow on. For example, when we did the hop on/off bus 3 out 4 of the buses we get on simply could not work their lift. Since I could get up the stair and my daughter could carry the wheelchair it was fine, but if I had been totally immobile or in an electric chair we would have had to wait....and wait...for a bus that worked.
Be sure to use the disabled bathroom stalls wherever you find them. Not all places had accessible restrooms and twice we had to change dinner plans b/c of that.
