I saw a suggested per diem posted somewhere. It was so much per day, not including transportation.
Any suggestions?
I am just looking for that ballpark figure to check with my own plans.
thnx

We went to Italy for 15 days in 2007 (the exchange rate is better now). We have traveled in Europe quite a bit. On the 2007 trip we were with two other couples who had not been before which sort of put us in charge. The other couples wanted to know how much it would be (not including airfare). My wife and I meticulously crafted a budget based on our spending habits on previous journeys. After our return we went back over the budget and it was very accurate.
It amounted to about $270 per couple per day. That included lodging (for one week of the trip we rented a very nice villa), dining and daily tourist activities. It did not include the airfare or the rental car since those were paid in advance. We do like fine dining and good wine. We traveled very well for that amount of money. Cutting back on some of the wine and fine dining we could have trimmed that amount significantly. Have fun.
Thanks much. I am running a bit over that and we won't be doing fine dining. I guess I didn't do a very good job of researching hotels. Hmmm
Oh, well, there is next time. First time I have ever taken this kind of trip, 7 cities in 21 days.
Ooops, I included air fare and rental car for 5 days........ So I guess we will do pretty well.
Gotta quit this planning now. I think all is ready so I just have to pracetice packing and then off we go.........
We were in Italy in 2007 and in 16 nites spent 342.00 for my wife and I per day including airfare and rental car(4 persons)We ate well but not at expensive places.
A rough figure just as a guideline would be 100 Euro per day for everything you spend IN Europe, not to get there. And it's based on the expenses traveling as a couple. I give the amount in Euro as the exchange rate fluctuates and is different for US$, Cdn$, Aus$ NZ$ .....
Of course you can do it for less or spend much more. But this would give you a comfortable vacation without skimping on entrance fees or the occasional guided tour for the attractions you come to see. Hotels would be in the 3* range.
Travelling as a single person or as a family with kids would change the amount. We travel with 2 kids and spent about 75 Euro/day/person for everything excluding air fare to Italy last year. That was the most we ever spent travelling to Europe, in part because Italy is one of the more expensive destinations in Europe, in part because we arranged for a rather "touristy" itinerary with no contact to locals (we usually can ask European friends and family for the best deals, get the occasional dinner invitation ...).
