What would you take on your trip?

As I get ready to start packing for my upcoming trip, I thought about a thread I posted a couple of years ago.

Wouldn’t it be great, if you could take whatever you wanted on your trips and still travel light?

Just picture, 'Mary Poppins'... She arrives traveling very light; one carpet handbag and an umbrella!
Once inside the house, she retrieves a floor lamp, a wall mirror, a large potted plant, and other various items from her bag!

So... if you could pack 3 things in your one carry-on ('Mary Poppins' style), what would you take?

WAIT! Before you answer, there are a few rules:

  1. This question is about things, not people, pets or animals

  2. There is a size limit. Whatever it is, it can't be bigger than your bed.

So, on my next trip, I would take... My clothes washer and dryer, and my comfy bed!

What would you take on your trip?

First choice: The nine (please don't laugh) pillows my husband I sleep with, along with our own bed sheets :)
Nothing like one's own pillows/bed for a good; night's sleep!!

Second choice: A bag of Granny Smith apples (just in case we can't find them wherever we travel, and often we can).

Third choice: Good lighting for the bathroom (some hotels/inns have such, some don't)

This ~possibly~ is TMI, but I'd bring my Squatty Potty. There is a travel size but only if you are traveling in a car, not light packing with a RS bag, hahaha!! The Mary Poppins bag would work though....

Laurel,

Ha! You still have room for two more things! ; )

Maggie,
You went way over the limit, but I’ll let it slide!

I love my pilllows too!

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away”
Hmmm... I wish this were true!

Pam,
Perhaps they make a folding kind?

I actually just learned about these as it was recommended to my mom by a GI specialist.

What else would you take?

I'm picturing Hermione and her beaded bag, not Mary Poppins.

I think the only thing(s) I would take is more clothes, shoes and beauty products. Would love to have easy access to anything from my wardrobe. Packing would be so much simpler!

Priscilla we think alike

  1. My Tempurpedic mattress
  2. Washer
  3. Dryer

A picnic table

An all-terrain armchair (adaptable to hotel rooms, beaches, museums, random public spaces)

Someone else's credit card

An a/c unit.

Like Laura's idea of someone else's credit card

Waterpik

Laurel-- since this is in the "Italy" category, would you really need a nespresso machine?

Priscilla, can we fly above each of the cities, too, in this fantasy? : )

  1. I would bring a recliner to relax my feet at the end of each day.
  2. A magic suitcase (separate from my carry on) that could hold lots of Italian food items but never needed to be carried and magically appeared at my next hotel & back home again.
  3. My pillow.

Love this ...
I'd bring my 2 down pillows and a foot massager!
(Someone else's credit card -- LOL!)

  1. Storage for basic foods, including working mini-fridge (we stay in apartments and have food allergies so every new accommodation means a trip to the grocery store. Fun when it’s buying local products. Not fun when I just want milk and yogurt and don’t need an authentic local market). Also I could buy great cheese in town 1 and keep it safely for the rest of the trip!

  2. My shoe rack. 15 pairs of shoes!!!

  3. Washer/dryer combo unit

It’s so fun to read about all your great ideas!

I love Laura’s:

Someone else's credit card

Wouldn’t that be wonderful!

Jean,
Yes, of course, we would be able to fly over the cities and choose where to land!

How about an endless supply of Italian gelato! Yum!!🍦

Ha! I think everyone here loves their pillow(s), delicious Italian food, and shoes!

Keep them coming!

For all my talk about necessary immersion to 'get' Italy...if we're being truthful here, it's the creature comforts at the end of the day:

  1. Washer/Dryer combo
  2. LED Hi-Def TV
  3. Digital Piano (prob this if I had to pick one thing)

Funny, I do pack my pillows already. I could not sleep without them I have tried.

1) more shoes
2) and I think more shoes - my feet get tired of wearing the same two pairs over and over!

Three things:

my pillow
an air conditioner or heater, depending on the season
more shoes

Item 1 -- I'm with Pam. Every trip it seems there's at least one occasion when one or both of us has ... unfortunate reaction to food/ water/ travel.
Item 2 -- like Laura, somebody else's credit card ( with a high limit!)
Item 3 -- flying carpet to carry me, my husband and the suitcases without worrying about stairs, escalators, taxis.

1) I would also bring my soft, downy pillow. I do have a down "travel" size pillow (that packs down to almost nothing) but it's just not the same for cuddling at the end of a long and busy travel day. 2) My laptop. Easier to work with than either my iPad mini or iPhone even though it's only an 11" MacBook Air-but has nice, big, easy to read keys. They don't make that small size anymore....sigh...... Oh...and of course, who wouldn't take someone else's credit card!!

We so seldom find them in our lodgings! Our favorite place in Ortisei has one because we bought it an left it with them as a gift, which they kindly loan to us upon our return. They are more commonly found in Swiss lodgings, although the capsules are easy to come by. And I'd give my eye teeth for one when I travel domestically!

  1. Books! This is my hardest item to leave behind. I love to read, but limit the number of books I travel with because of weight and I don't use a Kindle.
  2. Full size shampoo, conditioner, sunscreen, moisturizer, makeup, toothpaste, etc instead of the 3 ounce 1 quart size ziplock bag restricted liquids.
  3. A full size picnic set with basket, tablecloth, dishes, real wine glasses and silverware.

My very firm pillow. (I always have to ask for more pillows.)

My drip coffee maker.

A can of coffee and filters for above.

  1. my shower or if that's too big for the rules, then my shower head.
  2. my computer monitor and keyboard
  3. I would absolutely carry a Mary Poppins umbrella (I never use an umbrella abroad) so I could soar over crowded city streets, or just rest my aching feet as a look down on a scenic lake or rooftop view.

  1. Easel, canvas, and paints And brushes.. And more paints :)
  2. Books. I know there are e-versions, but there is something comforting about referencing an actual paper book.
  3. Wine glasses. Now, I'm not a wine snob, and not picky about what size or kind of wine glass to end the day with, it's just nice to have one for every person you're traveling with, whether that be 2 or 8, and you really just never know when traveling in Italy.

You all have great imaginations!

Jay,

So true! We love our comforts! Pillows, bed, shoes, washer/dryer...

Donna,

Funny, I do pack my pillows already. I could not sleep without them I have tried.

I’ve considered packing my pillows but I’d have to take a fairly large suitcase!

Do you take separate luggage for your pillows? Do you use those compression bags?

Deidre,

A/C and heater!

I wish I’d had a heater on my last trip while visiting Lake Maggiore. My hotel room was cold at night in mid/late September, and when I’d asked why the heater wasn’t turning on, I was told that there’s a rule that heaters can’t be turned on till October.
So they offered me extra blankets. You should have seen me sleeping under three heavy blankets! But I was so grateful for my wool socks and the extra blankets! ; )

Laura B,

I love the flying carpet idea!

Andi,

I also pack my small down travel pillow but it’s definitely not the same as having my other pilllows!

Laurel,

That sure sounds like a great gift!

Steph,

Funny I also ask for extra pillows!

Chani,

I wouldn’t mind taking my shower too!
Ha! Don’t get me started on those tiny showers!

Christine
I supppose one can buy regular sized toiletries when one arrives to our destination, but they may not have our favorite brands.

Rena,

If you had Mary Poppins’ magic bag, you could pack a wine glass for everyone in your party!

It’s fun to dream!

What else would you take on your trip?

Priscilla - I do use two medium size Eagle Creek compression bags. I have a 24 inch Briggs & Riley but I have taken my carry-on + backpack and one pillow goes in each. Last trip home from Italy I actually packed one in my carry-on but kept on with me for the flight! My sisters also carry their pillows every trip and now my 30 y/o nephew is starting his travel life pillow in hand!
